2 yr old sick temp 102

My 2yr old dd suddenly became very unwell a couple of hours ago. She felt all hot in her body and forehead but freezing cold hands and feet, usual high temperature signs. I took her temp which was 102.5. She's been crying on and off, doesn't want to move just laying here.

She had calpol but within 15 minutes started crying and vomited several times. Did it have time to get in her system? Or do I give her another dose and risk it making her vomit? I've also stripped her clothes off so she's just in socks, vest and nappy with a cotton sheet.

She keeps falling asleep next to me, refuses to move or do anything so she's really not feeling well at all. Hoping she sleeps a while and wakes up better but it seems like a nasty bug and I have towels ready for more vomit. Any advice or support appreciated as I'm home alone with her and stressing.

Can you give her some ibuprofen instead? As you have no way of knowing if she absorbed the paracetamol (though it sounds unlikely).

Try getting some fluids into her first dilute juice or water. If that stays down try ibuprofen as is hard to know how much calpol she has had. Also take the vest off, she will cool down faster in just a nappy. If she is vomiting everything up keep her hydrated by giving her 5mls of fluid every 5 minutes and phone 111 to see if you can get OOH GP referral for paracetamol suppositories.

Thank you! I tried giving a half dose to see if it would stay down, but she vomited it all back up within 5 minutes.

Small sips of water is staying down, 5ml twice so far. She's laying down with tv on dozing.

Please take a look at this - you perhaps need to get some medical advice here. Cold hands and feet whilst not mentioned in that link can also be a red flag sign in children with a fever. Without wishing to worry you DD developed septicaemia at 18months old and had some of these red flag signs. Your post is just a bit too close for comfort though hopefully nothing to worry about overall.

She is clearly very unwell.

Yes agree medical advice Ds needed is antibiotics and a hospital stay with similar symptoms

Agree. If this has happened so suddenly I would be phoning 111 or 999. This is definitely worrying as signs of an infection.

My DS (2) had a temp similar to this with an ear infection, I noticed his chilly hands and feet at the same time I noticed his lips were slightly grey, I panicked and called 111, who sent a paramedic car round. Although DS was up and about, playing and 'well' in himself, bizarrely! They sent us to A&E but the advice was to continue as we were, paracetamol and ibuprofen alternately, and lots of fluids. I would be concerned at the dehydration and the high temps if she's vomiting, get some advice before you have a night time of worry!

Freezing cold hands and feet with a high temp is one of the early symptoms of meningitis... Better to be safe than sorry and see an ooh doctor.

In the last week my two dds have had a bug that presented as very high temperatures (thermometer hit 103 for first time ever), headache, cough and vomiting. First dd was ill for about 3 days. Dd2 is one day in. Ds is showing signs of coming down with it..

Sorry to derail but would you really call 111 for a temp of 102? I've just converted and it says it's 38.8. My DD has had a temp around there since Monday and now I'm worrying i haven't done enough..

That temp isn't really that high, not 999 worthy anyway the hysteria on this thread.

Keep an eye, try keep hydrated as much as possible and if it climbs above 40 and you can't get or keep it down, then seek advice.

There are loads of bugs going about but a temp of 38 is what I would expect in a bairn that age catching one of the bugs going about.

The temperature itself is not that high - as gamerchick says, normal range for a toddler with a bug.

I would give 111 a call on account of the cold hands/feet as I was taught this was something to watch out for on a first aid course - although having said that I've called 111 with similar symptoms before and it's been nothing more than a short-lived bug.

Call 111 OP, it could easily be something viral and relatively minor but there are enough symptoms which match with meningitis to warrant checking with a HCP. Better to be safe for the sake of a phone call.

Ah, I agree 38.8 isn't too high. I think I'd got confused about the Fahrenheit. Agree it's definitely not 999 worthy but you could call 111 as it sounds like the cold hands and feet are more of a concern.
