5 year old with atopic eczema and using aqueous cream

5 yr old DD started developing pimply spots over torso last week. Initially thought it was heat rash, but it got worse by Friday. Went to an NHS walk in clinic yesterday and they have advised a routine of Oilatum in the bath, piriton to calm itching and aqueous cream to moisturise her skin. However a quick search on the internet this evening and I can see that both the British Association of Dermatologists and the national Eczema charity say that aqueous cream should not be used as an emollient and can in fact be damaging to the skin as it contains SLS. So my questions are a) have I been given dud advice about the aqueous cream, b) should I stop using it and b) what are other emollients/moisturisers that I could consider using instead. Very grateful for any insight please!

I use silcocks base on my 4 year old. Aqueous is still fine to use in the bath just not to rub into the skin

We use oilatum junior in the bath and aveno each night. If dd has a shower we use aveno body wash.

I hate that the first recommendation is always bloody aqueous cream! I wouldn't use it as an emollient, no.

Pimple spots doesn't sound much like eczema. DS's is red and scaly. The only time it has been pimply is when infected. I'm not saying your DD's is though!

If eczema you will need to try several creams to find the one that suits. Epaderm was the only one that worked for DS.

Hope it clears up soon!

We also put coconut oil on flare-ups, works beautifully at taking the itch and redness out of the skin.

Aqueous cream is rubbish and doesn't work for anything, in my opinion. It actually caused a reaction in addition. Epaderm is great - I would just go and buy a tub, 13 pound from chemist and then ask for it on prescription. Use it especially after baths, I would also use it every night before bed - to let it soak in. If you can again the morning. It is very greasy - so don't go too close to hairline.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses! I think a trip to the GP for a second opinion is going to be needed. Until then I'll try one of these other suggested emollients if I can buy them over the counter. The aqueous cream is really thick and sticky.

It drives me mad that they are still recommending aqueous cream.

It does tend to be trial and error for each individual - my ds initially responded really well to Aveeno but one day he started reacting to it. Coconut oil is terrible for DS.

Dd developed eczema at 4weeks old 10 years ago. I was recommended to use aqueous cream by GP. No improvement, and was referred to the eczema nurse. She was horrified that aqueous cream was being recommended by GP still! 10 years ago!

10 years and 4 dcs all with eczema later, and Avenno is the best thing for us. Along with steroids accasionally. It flares up more in winter. No scented soaps, not showering/soaping every day, washing in non-bio liquid all help.

Best to see your GP and no, no, no to aqueous cream!!!! Use it as a soap substitute by all means, but it is not a cream.
Every skin rash gets diagnosed as eczema, in my experience, so make sure you talk to somebody who actually knows what they are talking about. Some GPs have "special interests", maybe your practice have somebody with an interest in dermatology?
Until then I would stick with the Piriton and maybe try Aveeno.
