Orange juice

Do your children drink orange juice?
My dentist said that my children shouldn't be drinking it but they only have it at breakfast and dinnertime never really at lunch or between meals.

Mine love it but it's bought only occasionally. Not every day...for one thing they like pure juice and it's expensive, so we might buy one carton per week and with 4 in the house, it's gone in a day.

It's full of sugar, which is why the dentist has said they shouldn't drink it. All juices are full of sugar it's nowhere near as healthy as eating the actual fruits and should not be considered part of your. 5 a day in my opinion.

It's fine to have alongside a meal. My two only have it at breakfast time.

Mine have it with breakfast. I refuse to think squished fruit is bad for them once a day. It's packed full of vitamin C and they also get lots of regular fruit.
I just make sure there's a gap between them having it and brushing their teeth for school.

mine have it diluted with dinner.
bedtime & teethbrushing an hour or so after so no issue with that

Pretty much like drinking full fat coke for breakfast. Same amount of sugar ml/ml and much more acidic. 250ml of orange juice contains the juice of 6 large oranges, and unless freshly squeezed from the fruit most of the Vit C has been added back in along with colour and flavour. Food for thought.

See below government guidelines link -Delivering Better Oral Health, under Section 4-page 32. This is pretty much the UK dentists prevention bible & a very important document for dentists who only treat children.

One small 150ml fresh OJ with breakfast is acceptable & counts as 1 of 5 per day.
The important things are that children have their teeth brushed properly with correct fluoride concentration t/paste before their breakfast; or leave at least 1hour to brush after meal.Only water to drink between meals. Best not to snack at all between meals. The oral pH graphs in the link show the huge fluctuations during the day. In a nutshell, teeth can remineralise after exposure to 3 acid attacks per day (breakfast/lunch/dinner). Anymore than 3 acid attacks per day, mean teeth never get the opportunity to remineralise & are therefore vulnerable to demineralisation & dental caries.

DS drinks plenty of non-concentrate fresh orange juice. He's a terrible eater so I take what I can get.

If he ate a wide range of stuff I'd ration it a bit, but beggars can't be choosers.

Dentist just told me to be careful to brush his teeth really well.
