Poorly 13 month old - OOH?

Feel like I'm always on this board recently, it's just one thing after another in my house atm

This time it's the baby
He's 13 months and he's had s bit of a cold; snotty, chesty cough, for a little under a week now
The last couple of days his temperature has been high quite a lot and he's been very very sleepy (he went to bed at 5:30 the other night after falling asleep in his dinner) he's generally up and down a lot in the night because of his temperature but still trying to sleep and clearly really really wanting to be asleep

Last night he was in bed for 7 but then I brought him downstairs around 10 as he was pretty much inconsolable and he had a raging temperature
He dozed on the couch till 1ish when I took him to bed
It's 10am now and he's still in bed
He keeps half waking up, trying to smile at me which turns into a little cry then falling back to sleep
He's warm but isn't really awake enough for me to give him any paracetamol
He's drank a bottle of water throughout the night and is weeing quite a lot

This is very very out of character for him (he's really not a sleeper) so I'm a bit worried, but then he's never been particularly poorly before so maybe he's going to be one of those people who just sleeps a lot when unwell?

Would you take him to OOH today, or just let him sleep as much as he wants as long as he's drinking?

give him calpol and keep up the fluids.

NoahVale · 11/12/2016 10:11

do you have a syringe to put the calpol into his mouth?

NoahVale · 11/12/2016 10:12

if you are worried then go to OOHs though.

NoUseNumber27 · 11/12/2016 10:20

Call 111 for advice, but they will probably make appointment with ooh. Ds had similar symptoms on thurs eve and had bronchilitis and slightly dehydrated but he is only 4 months. Probably just a cold and fever but call to give you peace of mind. Smile

NoCapes · 11/12/2016 10:23

I haven't got a syringe, I used it for the dog and had to throw it away 🙄

but you need to get his temperature down so you need to get calpol and drinks in him,

NoCapes · 11/12/2016 10:25

He is drinking, I've just refilled his water again
If I put calpol in a teat would he be able to suck it out? Or would it be too thick?
I'm going to try that I think

If you can get the temp down he would feel a lot better.
It isn't nessecery to treat a fever anymore, if they have a temp and are playing, eating and drinking fine.
But with your lo he seems distressed and in pain.
Not sure about the teat thing, but I would try and get it into him.
Hope he is better soon.

fruitpastille · 11/12/2016 11:01

I often put calpol in juice as my dd won't take it. Will he drink from a sippy cup?

123bananas · 11/12/2016 11:06

Mix calpol in juice and let him drink it. If he has been ill for nearly a week and is now spiking fevers for it could be an infection. The drowsiness would concern me so I think he should be checked over.

Reality16 · 11/12/2016 11:13

I wouldn't worry about tiredness in an unwell child, it's quite normal to sleep more when we are not well. I have had a viral chest infection all week and have slept about 5 more hours every day compared with normal. The only thing I would be slightly concerned about would be the temperature, but even that is normal when fighting an infection. Call the NHS line for advice as your DC is still very little, they may want to check them over, but TBH it does sound pretty normal of an unwell child.

NoCapes · 11/12/2016 11:24

Thanks for the advice, he's awake now and has taken some medicine
I did think it could be an infection as the temperature has been going on for 4 days or so now, so I definitely do think I need to get him seen, just not sure whether to just wait till tomorrow at GP instead of faffing about today
I'm much less worried now he's awake properly though - although he does look like shit bless him Sad

Please get medical advice rather than relying on this board. Ring 111 and speak to someone and then they can get you the right advice and help decide with a doctor if he needs to be seen.

My daughter at 18 months old developed septicaemia from "a viral cold", she was drinking, not eating and sleeping loads in the 36hr or so before she ended up in intensive care fighting for her life. She's 7 now but left with a long term physical disability from this.

NoCapes · 11/12/2016 12:55

Oh gosh beautiful so sorry to hear about your DD Flowers

beautifulgirls · 11/12/2016 20:28

Thanks NoCapes - she is a wonderful 7 year old and things could have been so much worse. Currently it upsets me more than it upsets her and as she was so young she doesn't remember being any different, life just carries on her for her and she doesn't let it stop her. She changed school in September and her new teacher had to help her explain it all to the class - she cant believe how laid back DD is about it and how she just carries on! Perhaps in time it will be more of an issue to DD especially emotionally but we cross each bridge as it happens.

How has your son been the rest of today?

NoCapes · 12/12/2016 20:10

Aww bless her, they're so resilient aren't they Smile

I took him to a doctor and he's got a chest infection, ear infection and he thinks a bit of a virus aswell - poor thing Xmas Sad
He's started on antibiotics though and actually ate dinner tonight so I'm hopeful for a speedy recovery Xmas Smile

Thankyou all for the advice!
