I never know when to take my kids to the GP.

Sorry this is a bit of a garbled thread, as the title says, I never know when to take the kids to see the GP or when to treat at home.
My eldest child had chronic ling disease so I've always been told to always speak to one of his team if anything is bothering me or if anything changes, I'm fine with that but I have 3 other children and I never know when I'm wasting time or not. Don't get me wrong I never take them for the slightest cold/cough or anything and I usually don't take them and a coupe of times they've then ended up in hospital BlushSad.

For instance, my DD is 19 months and has a runny nose/glassy eyed viral cold type thing, however she also has spent 3 days with a really high fever (being controlled by calpol and ibuprofen) but as soon as it wear off the temp shoots back to 39+ and she also has the most awful heart cough where she's coughing up a lot of phlegm, she spends long periods of time sleeping and acting a bit dazed but has had periods of normal playing too,
I don't want to waste time seeing a GP if it's a viral thing that she'll shake by herself but equally o don't want her to get worse.
There's so much in the media about time wasters and the NHS being in its knees. We take so much out of it already which I feel bad for (I know I shouldn't but drs often remind me that new treatments for DS are costing hundreds of thousands per year so it's hard not too!)

Aw she is so young the doc shouldnt mind seeing her, hope she gets better soon.

Rumtopf · 09/12/2016 14:23

If you're not sure then ask for a call back from an available doctor and they can make the decision on whether to see her or not.

Tbh though if a fever lasted more than 3 days with a very high temp, I'd have taken my dd to the dr's to see if it was something more than just a virus. Hope she's better soon.

When they're little I think doctors are usually happy to see them just in case. Does your GP do phone appointments? With ours you can ask to be put on the list for the duty doctor to call, it doesn't take as much time as an appointment. Can be a long wait for a call, but I don't mind that if it's non-urgent. Hope they get well soon.

Our GP surgery has a nurse practitioner who will call you back to give you advice or suggest you see the GP.

I agree, its hard to know what is normal especially when you have one that has more needs.
Personally, I think I would take my kids if I was worried about them. Its what the GP service is there for.

Time wasters are the adults who have a cold, but want a 2 week off work note. Or the ones who take an emergency appointment because they were too disorganised to ask for a refill of their non urgent medication prescription. Or those who think that just because they are entitled to free prescriptions they should take an apointment for free prescription of paracetamol. (its 19p in aldi). Or the women who get a contraceptive implant for a month and then decide they don't want it and have it out after 4 weeks all whilst their partner has been at sea. Or the ones who use termination as a means of contraception. Or the ones who know that all their health problems are caused by being overweight yet refuse to do anything about it at all because they have no conept of personal responsibilty..

aarghh, I could go on and on .

Take your bubba to the GP. Its what you pay your taxes for.

Any dr I have ever seen has always been more than happy to see an ill child
They can get really ill so quickly - not worth taking the chance
In your shoes I would take her - if she is coughing up phlegm it's prob a chest infection

hanban89 · 10/12/2016 22:46

My doctors are quite strict with emergency appointments but are all happy to see an ill child no questions. The practice manager once said that he'd rather see them just in case there is anything to worry about. Hope your LO gets better soon.
