3 month old urine smells awful.

I have taken her to the doctors as a couple of weeks ago my daughters wet nappies began to smell vile. They did a urine sample and no UTI so now they have just brushed me off to "keep an eye on it". Honestly, it smells so strong it smells the whole room out when i change her nappy. Other than this she seems fine, still laughing and no fever. Any ideas? X

is it defo the urine or is it the nappy?! IMO some smell rank!

Nishky · 08/12/2016 09:16

My dd was admitted to hospital with uti at 9 months- I felt really guilty as hadn't acted on strong smelling urine- consultant said can be nothing.

CatsCantFlyFast · 08/12/2016 09:17

If it's been tested to not be a uti - did the doctor have a sniff of the nappy?

Wet pampers smell strongly like beef crisps imo

SausageSoda · 08/12/2016 09:19

It might be the nappy? Some do have a distinct smell when wet.

spacefrog35 · 08/12/2016 09:23

Pampers always smelt of marmite to me so I can see the beef crisps thing!

What colour is her urine? Is she showing any signs of discomfort? Does she have a temperature? If your gut tells you there's something wrong then take her back to the docs but if you think she's ok & it's just an odd smell then keeping an eye on it seems like the right course of action.

YepYep1 · 08/12/2016 09:24

I have read it could be tge nappy but she has been wearing the same brand since birth. We used Pampers for about a week but they were awful!! Might try a different brand just to see if we can rule it out. Thank you x

The doctor didnt sniff the nappy and just said he has no reason to think it coukd be a UTI as she doesnt have a fever x

I found you end up changing brands as they get older, seems they go through stages of suiting different shapes anyway.

BertieBotts · 08/12/2016 09:28

Huh? That's not right. I never get a fever with UTIs. Can't they do a urine test? It's not expensive for them to run one. I would try to collect a sample (hold her over a bowl when she first wakes up and make a "pssss" sound) and take it in and ask them to check it.

YepYep1 · 08/12/2016 10:19

They have done a urine a test and they said it came back fine so they dismissed us :( x

Is she showing any signs of teething? It would be early at 3 months but possible and apparently can affect the urine smell due to extra saliva.

If it's been a couple of weeks since the urine test you could go back and ask for another one. Just because it wasn't a UTI then doesn't mean it can't be one now.

gammatron · 08/12/2016 14:06

Even if you use the same brand, it could still be the nappy! I find some packs smell worse than others, even though they are the same brand & size! Hope your little one is ok

Wolfiefan · 08/12/2016 14:10

Is she drinking enough or could she be dehydrated?

YepYep1 · 10/12/2016 07:35

Thanks for the replies! She doesn't seem dehydrated as she's drinking her milk and bits of water throughout the day but she struggles to take tge water so maybe?
Will keep trying but looks like pushing the doctors to do something x

I agree with Fizzy. Both of my DC had really odd smelling urine when teething. Although no-one else but my mum and me noticed. I noticed the smell in DD2 when she was a few weeks old, and sure enough she had a little tooth poking through.

dailymaillazyjournos · 11/12/2016 21:14

When you say it smells awful can you describe the smell? Fishy? Very strong? I have perpetual UTI's and I can often tell when they're starting by the smell. It starts to smell stronger and has a 'men's toilet' overtone to it (sorry TMI I know). I don't get a fever and often feel fine. Sometimes I feel more tired but often not. I would get another sample checked and sent off to the lab to see if anything grows. Dipstick tests aren't 100% reliable.
