Any tips to soothe coughing?

Right. DS(4) has a irritating cough (for both him and me). Whenever he's lying down, he's coughing. Dry, tickle, occasionally slightly chesty.

Things we have tried so far:

  • raising his bed head to lift him slightly
  • spoonful of honey
  • no dairy through the day
  • weak squash to lubricate his throat

Right. What other things work for people? We have a rubbishy Tixylix syrup that hasn't worked previously, but I don't really see the point...

No idea too weird!

My little one had a cough and the dr told me to put a bowl of water on the radiator through the night so that the heat makes steam and keeps the throats lubricated. It worked. It didn't stop it completely but she slept much better.

Vicks vapour rub on the soles of their feet, works really well.

Vicks and thick (it must be thick) socks

A couple of drops of Olbas oil on a tissue, tucked into the child's pillow case or hanging up in the room, is very effective. There is an Olbas oil for infants and another for older children/ adults.

Lemon and honey with a dash of apple cider vinegar...thyme and licorice syrup (herbalist)...half cut onion by bed...same here :(

A small square of chocolate.
Glycerine and honey (or blackcurrant) cough syrup.

Rub Vicks into soles of his feet & cover with socks..sounds odd but worked for my little one & lots of other friends lo too.,

mylittlephoney · 07/12/2016 23:34

A tea spoon of honey at night. Vics vaporub . Paracetamol and water next to the radiator (the heat drys the throat)

Thanks folks - we made it through to 6am with these, so a considerable improvement from yesterday's 3.45 get-up!

We don't have heating on in our bedrooms, but the others are goers - may have to invest in a humidifier...

Another vote for Vicks on the feet, no idea why it works but it does. DD can be coughing all day (doesn't work while she's up and about for some reason, needs the heat of being tucked up in bed maybe?) but do the Vicks and socks thing at night and I don't hear a peep out of her. It's something to do with reflexology points I think, hasn't let me down yet anyway.

Yep, Vicks on soles of feet here too. We don't even put socks on them (as DS gets too hot) and it still works.
