Hi all,

My DS is 15 months and currently not very well. He is full of cold, had a sticky eye through the night and a horrendous cough.

His fever is up and down being controlled with alternating paracetamol and ibruprofen.

He isn't eating anything which is so out of character as he loves food! Even launched his Banana!

Is it worth just riding it out or a trip to GP? Wondering if it's possible chest infection or perhaps tonsillitis? He is borking when eating food.

Thanks in advance for replies x

Have a look at his throat with a torch?
It could be that he's struggling to eat due to been congested with the cold.
As fit going to gp I wouldn't rush If it's only just started. Colds take a while to clear Flowers

onestepforwardtenstepsback · 06/12/2016 12:38

For not fit sorry on my phone

LONC2012 · 06/12/2016 19:19

Temp peaked to 39.4 and is now staying around 38.8. He is fast asleep

If his temps stays up above 38 I'd give either 111 or the GP a call in the morning.
Just keep an eye on his cough and watch for if his chest is pulling in under the ribs as that could be an infection.
Hope he feels better soon.

3luckystars · 06/12/2016 21:52

I would definitely bring him to the doctor. He will need something for his eye anyway.

Friendinneed2016 · 06/12/2016 21:54

I Think he needs to see a doctor. Call 111 and they will get you an appointment tonight.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 06/12/2016 21:56

A temp thats not coming down with calpol needs to be checked out, could be flu which can be very serious in little ones. I wouldn't worry about giving him food, just fluids for now.

LONC2012 · 07/12/2016 06:30

He slept okay through the night and his temp started to come down a bit however he has woken up with a temp of 38.8 so I will call the GP this morning and get him checked out poor little sausage.

Last time his temp was up he had a febrile convulsion so we have been worrying like mad but he has been okay so fingers crossed it was a one off!

Thanks for your replies I will let you know what GP says x

GP said it's just viral however since coming home from GP my little boy has slept all morning from 9:30-12 and is still sleepy but awake and responding. He seems to be breathing quite fast and his temp spiked again to 39.5 but has since come back down.

I'm feeling worried but feel that I'll just be laughed away if I take him back when they hve already told me it's viral

A mothers instinct is usually right. If you feel he his getting worse take him back. Some children get worse rapidly. Did they check his ears throats etc

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 07/12/2016 19:30

It may well be viral but some viruses can be very serious in kids, if you're not happy take him back or take to a&e. My dd (10yo) ended up in PICU this year with complications due to flu, the day she was admitted she has already been seen and dismissed by a paramedic and a GP. My instinct was 100% right and I will never doubt it again.

3luckystars · 07/12/2016 19:58

Bring him back.

beautifulgirls · 07/12/2016 20:23

Please trust your instinct if you are not happy with how he is doing. Never feel you shouldn't seek another opinion if you are worried. If we hadn't done so when DD3 was small she would have died. She had already seen 2 doctors over the previous day/same day.

LONC2012 · 08/12/2016 02:54

Lucky I trusted my instinct!
We went back to GP (different one to this morning) who instantly saw he was in a bit of respiratory distress. He put him on a nebuliser and arranged an ambulance.

We got to A&E resus with doctors and nurses all ready. He had a chest X-ray which discovered he had a chest infection that had come on due to his virus.

They have put him on antibiotics and kept him in over night for observation. He is on oxygen as his levels keep dropping under 92 and his bpm keeps rising. Plus temp is still going up once pain relief wears off!

Thank you all for your replies, it's almost 3am and we haven't had much sleep yet. Just glad I trusted myself and he is in safe hands this evening x

Oh poor little mite.
The old fashioned washing all over with lukewarm water and flannel can help to bring a temperature down next time if you are at home. I was thinking chest infection so glad you took him back! Hope you manage a little sleep try a cocoa or herb tea to help you relax. You won't get much but a few hours deep sleep will set you up for tomorrow. Hospitals are not places for much sleep. Hope he is better soon.

3luckystars · 08/12/2016 05:43

Well done. I hope he improves today.
If its pneumonia it may take him longer than normal to bounce back and he will be weak for a good while. Best wishes.

beautifulgirls · 08/12/2016 08:00

Glad he is now in good hands - hope he makes a speedy recovery from here.

youlemming · 08/12/2016 17:15

Glad you went back same happened with us a few months ago ended up with sats of 88 and on oxygen for 3 days, if it had been dealt with 2days before when we first saw the GP it wouldn't have got to that stage!

Always go with your instincts, hope he feels better soon.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 08/12/2016 23:10

Oh bless him, well done you for taking him back and hope he makes a speedy recovery Flowers

LONC2012 · 09/12/2016 06:59

Thank you everyone!

We are home now, he has to have an inhaler every 4 hours and then 6 hourly over the weekend and they said he should be better by Monday.

So he has antibiotics, an inhaler and throat spray to numb his sore throats so that hopefully he will start to eat something.

It's been a long couple of days but just so glad I trusted myself and went back. We had a strange ambulance experience where the driver didn't know where the hospital was and the paramedic in the back didn't sit down once and was flying all over the place!

Then we were in a busy ward where he was connected to a bpm machine but because it kept bleeping they turned it off and said they would just monitor it - they never did that. Anyway we are home and I know to take him back should I be worried.

A big thank you again for your concerns xx

Aah poor little guy. Hopefully now with the antibiotics he should start improving. I learned to trust my instincts also and I don't hesitate to go in now. Well done you.
