High temp and fast breathing in toddler?

Nikki2ol6 · 04/12/2016 10:53

My toddler is 19 months and had a cold for a couple of days and been sleeping a lot but today woke up very hot so I have given nurofen and he's cooled off now but I noticed he was breathing quite fast so counted and he breathed 10 times in 10 seconds so that will be around 60 per minuet.... besides this he's very clingy and generally unwell! He's coughing and sneezing and when he breaths sounds like he needs a good cough as if there is mucus on his chest

Call 111.

You should probably get him checked over at OOH GP.

In the mean time have you got any vaporub? And you could fill the bathroom with steam and sit with him in there to help with his breathing.

Flowers hope he's in the mend soon

Call 111
Respiratory distress!

By the way I've been told off for not calling an ambulance when my dd was breathing at 60 breaths per minute. So don't hang about call 111 now.

They can breathe more rapidly when they have a temp. You'll probably find it eases as his temp reduces. The cold could have turned into a chest infection hence the temperature kicking in. Probably best to get him seen he may need penicillin or antibiotics.

Do call 111. It could be something like bronchilolitis which isn't necessarily serious but can get serious if left untreated. I know a few small kids who've been hospitalised with it, my own son wasn't but 111 arranged for us to see a doc that day, it was a Sunday. NHS are quite good in taking anything like this quite seriously in small kids IME.
