Hi all,

My little girl goes to a childminders when I go to work- she looks like she might be getting a cold sore. In your experience, can children still go to nursery/Childminder's with a cold sore?

Xx

Personally I would not send my ds in if he was contagious. Someone gave my ds the coldsore virus and ive never forgiven them, it's just sharing the suffering which he now has for life (as do I as I have since caught it of him).

Perhaps ask childminder/nursery? They will have a policy on these things. I'm sure if they can manage a condition they will.

No, the cold sore virus is extremely dangerous to newborn babies in particular and it's very contagious, so it's just not work the risk I'm afraid. Do you have alternative childcare?

GloriousSlug · 02/12/2016 06:17

I have sent my youngest to nursery and childminders with a coldsore, neither excluded for it and the nursery I now work in does not exclude for them.

Are you sure it's a definitely a coldsore? Impetigo can look similar and I know Early Years settings do have to exclude for that.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 02/12/2016 06:30

No no no. As both pp's said, it's dangerous virus for babies and lifelong for anyone else. It must seem ridiculous but I think you have to keep him off. Check what your nursery's policy is but I wouldn't feel comfortable.

Sorry op

They're very very contagious and can be quite dangerous even to adults.

Children are super vectors and I'd imagine a cold sore could be spread to everyone in the nursery pretty quickly.

I'd be upset if there was a child with a cold sore at nursery - it can be dangerous but also easily transmissible and it's a life long virus so not something you should take to a nursery IMO

This is the Health Care Advice for Nurseries, that Childminders usually adhere to

www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/522337/Guidance_on_infection_control_in_schools.pdf

Saying that as a former CM I always insisted that cold sores had been treated before coming in.

insancerre · 02/12/2016 07:26

Cold sores are normally mild and self limiting and there is no exclusion period recommended by health authorities
We don't exclude in my nursery and we follow government guudance

Scrumptiousbears · 02/12/2016 07:28

I'd be really pissed off if my DD caught the cold sore virus from a child at nursery. Once you've caught it, it will never leave the body. I've suffered with them nearly all of my life.

FoggyMorn · 02/12/2016 07:41

Don't suffer with them- acyclovir at the first tingle! Cheap and available OTC.

I wouldn't send an untreated DC in with a cold sore.

Luckystar1 · 02/12/2016 07:53

Oh please don't let your child be at nursery with mine if you're sending in with a cold sore. I have a small baby at home too, I would be really upset.

Sorry!
