Sanitary towels for first period

DD is just starting puberty, so I'd like to have some sanitary towels in stock.

Which brand is recommended for smaller knickers and are not overly-chemically?

Thank you.

What I would do is get her a selection box, so a sample of lots of different brands/types

Poundland is a good place to source these, because they're smaller boxes and you could get her a moon cup for her to use one day. i dunno, i just know that when it was me I wanted to try out a few different things, but she might be too embarassed to ask (i wouldnt know) but that could be an idea?

My Dd (12) doesn't like using tampons and has only used them twice and only because we were on holiday abroad at the time and she wanted to go in the pool. She would not choose to use them routinely.

I'm probably going to get some diary doll pants diarydoll.com/ for my DD when it looks like she's close to starting her periods. I remember dreading leaking when I was at school and these look like they'd remove that fear.

Ooft I'm not paying £15 for one pair of pants. You'd also need several pairs to cover the full time of the period. Dd has black pants from the supermarket although I had to get them from the ladies section as they don't seem to do them for children.

"I would go straight to tampons"

For an 8 year old Hmm. DD is 16 and won't consider them. She has read about TSS and is too scared to use them.

I invested in similar pants to diary doll called Adira for dd recently and have worn some myself for about 4 years ( minus pregnancies!) and they are still in excellent condition. I always stressed about leaking and both of us have heavy flow so are worth it to us. They will be worn for years, and 6 pairs cover full cycle with two pairs used a day, as long as we wash them in time... I wouldnt fancy leaving them long if stained anyway.
There are some available on eBay for £5 or less but are one-size and we don't fit them. Might be worth a look.

I find Naty brand ones have much much better adhesive than Natracare but have the same natural materials, no chlorine etc.

DD started off with lilets, but quickly decided they didn't give enough protection (teenage paranoia) and now has her own preference. We also got some Diarydoll pants - yes they're expensive but good quality. She refuses to try tampons.

Tip: I have a photo on my phone of the brand she prefers, because if I buy the wrong kind the hormonal tears are just awful!

But the 8yr old is not actually having periods yet...
I used tampons from the first day of my periods and that was more than 35yrs ago. My sister just said she used them and that was that - after 1 fumbled attempt I got it right. I guess in those days the pads were frightful things. At that time I honestly thought everyone else used them too and couldn't figure out why all this whispering about 'she can't do swimming, nudge nudge wink wink' was going on.
Once my sister's friend came to the beach with us and had to sit fully dressed on her own while we went swimming. TSS is extremely rare in fairness.

I got my DD the lillets starter pack at about that age (it includes day pads, night pads and a dew tampons plus a small fabric bag to keep spares in and a booklet aimed at teens about how to use them etc). She tells me this made her feel more confident about the idea of starting her periods as she knew that she had 'supplies' in for when it happened.

The teens lillets are smaller than standard pads, so more comfortable for younger girls. However, once DD started her periods I did also buy her a selection of other pads so she could choose the one that was most comfortable- in the end this was not lillets as she found them too small and got more leaks with them than other brands. So if I had my time again I'd probably get the starter pack plus a few others.

Definitely buy her Naty or Natracare. I don't think tampons are a good choice for very young girls, they get their periods so much earlier than we did. Personally I have used tampons over the years, but I never really liked the idea of sticking bleached cotton wool up myself.

I recently got the Diary Doll pants for myself, and they are so good! It saves me a lot of washing, no more waking up with blood stains on my sheets. So even if they are expensive, I think they save money, time and embarrassment in the long run. If only they had been invented when I was a teen!
