Star shape in son's iris of eye

Can anyone else see this star shape in my son's eye? I've only recently noticed this, but having gone through old photos it seems he's had this for at least a year - he's just turned 3. Should I be concerned? Is it just an anomaly or is it something I should get checked out? I've never seen it heard of anything like this and I've tried Googling but can't find anything useful.

Any advice or reassurance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm only a GP but it's nothing I've ever come across to worry about. Iris pigmentation is genetic and random. If his eyesight is ok and his pupils are ok then I can't see a cause for concern.

Maybe an ophthalmologist will be along with more advice. Otherwise just enjoy your boy with stars in his eyes.

I can't really see anything in the photo but my DD2 has a heterochromea - a fleck of different colour in one iris - could it be this? If so, they should be checked by an optician but are almost always completely harmless.

Thank you for your reply. His eyesight is great as far as I can tell, he spots things a mile off, well before me! It's really helpful to know you haven't come across anything like it, so that puts my mind at rest a little.

All I can see are hazel coloured eyes? The star effect is just the colouring. My DH is the same

Hi grace, sorry the photo isn't great as he wouldn't keep still. But to me it seems as if there's a black star shaped hole, although you could be right in that it might just be a different colour. It's only in one eye.

Hi pika. It's at the bottom of the eye, not around the pupil? It looks to me like a 5 point star.

Ah can see it now. Just probably colour action of the iris. If concerned ask an optician to have a check

Probably just normal colorings but take him for an eyetest and ask the optometrist.

Nope,still can't see it but yes agree with taking him to see an optician if you're concerned.

I hope this doesn't out me as it's quite distinctive, I have sectoral heterochromia. Googling it seems to suggest that it's associated with illnesses etc, but I've had it as far as I can remember and don't seem to have any related disease. My mum doesn't remember when she first noticed it and childhood photos aren't clear enough to show it.

There is a yahoo group for heterochromia, it might be worth joining that.

It looks like just a different pigment in his eye. DS has a Madeline McCann style tear drop in one if his eyes.

I think my parents got mine checked out at some point and after that just told me I had a freckle in my eye.

looks like a unique genetic trait hes just special but get his eyes checked at the opticians if your worried

Yep, sectoral heterochromia is what my daughter has. The optician checked it when she was about a year old. He told me that they only very, very rarely are an indication of a problem but it's worth getting it checked.
