Dentist told me loosing baby teeth late means DS will be tall?!

DS only child in class not to have lost baby teeth (will be going into y2) I've read all sorts of negative things such as its due to poor nutrition etc (he's a super picky eater). Dentist suggested it was fine and that the taller you will be the later you lose these teeth. He didn't appear to be joking. Started talking about petuitory (sp?) glands. Has anyone else heard this?

My DS is nearly 11 and still has most of his baby teeth, he is very small for his age but he has a very good diet I worry about it al lot but his dentist said its better for the big teeth to come in late.

All 3 of my six- foot plus sons lost their baby teeth early, as did I (5'4) and my brother (5'7).
Have never heard of that theory before, not aware of any correlation.

my lot are all tall and were very late to lose teeth, ds1 had his last one tweaked out by the dentist when he was about 12 I think, he was furious...he wanted it to stay.
Also as far as it is possible to get from picky eaters.!

Children who growth spurt later than average tend to end up taller than average. Generally.

I think your dentist was spouting anecdotal 'facts', but if loosing teeth later on is a sign of general development, and therefore growth spurts, happening later than average perhaps he's not as barmy as he sounds.

DS 1 lost first tooth at 7.5 and at 9 has still only lost 6 teeth. He didn't get any teeth until he was 1. He's the smallest child in his class.

DS2 is 7 going into year 5 and has not lost any teeth and is on 0.4 percentile for height.
He didn't get any teeth until he was 2.

I call bullshit!

mrspitt · 20/08/2016 17:07

Surely height is determined by genetics?
DS 14 and 6'1 lost all baby teeth before 11.
DD1 12 and 5'7 doesn't have any baby teeth left and awaiting fixed braces.
DD2 10 has had 2 baby teeth fall out in the last week with only 1 left to fall out!

Dcs were relatively late to lose teeth ad I was pleased assuming the later you get your adult ones the healthier they're likely to be

summerchocolate · 21/08/2016 14:33

What the dentist means is there is a correlation between delayed bone age and delayed teeth development hence the child may end up taller than they currently appear. ie a child on bottom centile and still not lost any baby teeth at age 8 may have bone age delayed by 2 years so will carry on growing 2 years later than average therefore unlikely to end up on bottom centile at final adult height. The dentist doesn't mean that tall children lose teeth later. Early loss of teeth often correlates with advanced bone age and hence reaching final adult height before the average child.

Can I correct my earlier post? I have twins going into year 3. 1 has all his teeth and the other has lost his first baby tooth!

TheCrumpettyTree · 21/08/2016 20:15

I still had baby teeth as a teenager and I'm 5ft2!

MaMattoo · 21/08/2016 21:25

Another one here, year 2 in September and not a wobbly tooth in sight. I don't know about the height connection but our dentist said that there is a direct correlation between when teeth came in and when they shall wobble off - he did get his teeth quite late actually. He is tall too so i don't know which one it is, glad to know it's not just him that the tooth fairy hasn't visited :-)

Wafflenose · 23/08/2016 23:41

Year 2 not late at all. I'm a woodwind teacher so I notice people's teeth, and plenty of Year 3 children haven't lost any!

My older daughter had ALL her adult teeth in at 9 years and 5 months. Now at 10, she has braces already, and is nearly 5 feet tall. My 8 year old daughter has hardly lost any, and is at the lower end of average for height. I can't see how height and teeth can possibly be related!
