Blood sugar levels 5 year old

Would be grateful for any thoughts on this and hoping someone can tell me I'm worrying unnecessarily. My daughter has been very irritable lately, she seems thirsty a lot (although not dreadfully so) is ravenously hungry constantly and has been urinating more - not all the time but we often have periods where she'll go 2-3 times within 2 hrs with not much water in between. She's wet her bed in the last week despite being dry for two years. I've been a little concerned about diabetes but not too much as these are all very mild symptoms and could be down to anything else.

My son suffers from hypoglycaemia secondary to another medical issue so we have a blood sugar monitor in the house. When she woke up this morning she wet her pyjama trousers a bit and I just thought I'd finally test her BGL to put my mind at rest. I had been tempted before but thought I was being paranoid and resisted. She had had about 4-5 small rice crackers about 30 mins previously before I tested her otherwise nothing for about 11 hrs but her bgl was 9.3 which I was really surprised and a bit worried by. I've only seen a max of 7 when testing my son after bringing him out of a hypo.

So would that be a normal reading or should I keep monitoring her? My knowledge is all at the lower end of the bgl scale dealing with hypos so I'm not sure about the higher levels. I am hoping I am overreacting as we honestly have enough to deal with my sons many issues and don't want another set to deal with.

How are things flutterby?

lougle · 27/06/2016 16:19

I hope you've had some good advice from a professional today.

ChinchillaFur · 27/06/2016 18:17

Ah sorry to hear her BG levels have risen even higher. I presume you are now in hospital with her. If so, she will be getting great care. Well done for spotting the signs so quickly.

Sending you a huge hug and there is lots of support out there - it is very hard to accept the diagnosis as it just come so out of the blue. There are quite a few T1 parents on here I think who are far more knowledgeable than me, we're only 6 months in.

tiredsotiredso · 27/06/2016 18:55

Have just seen this & I am so sorry that it was high this morning & I am sure you have now been seen & getting the right help.

Thinking of you.

I actually didn't take her yesterday although I really regretted it and didn't sleep all night. I tested her this morning at the same time and fasting and it was back to normal (4.4) so possibly yesterday's high reading was just a spike? I have brought her to the hospital today to get her checked out over though as I really felt awful not bringing her in. They've done some initial bgl tests which showed 5.1. I am so relieved it's normal but want an explanation for the odd readings (if they are odd).

They've decided to admit her for a sugar profile to investigate further so we're on the ward now. The emergency Drs seemed to feel I was wasting their time a bit as she wasn't really ill and the high reading I took was yesterday whereas everything today seemed normal. They phoned up to the paediatric ward who decided they wanted to admit her.

You've definitely done the right thing in getting her checked out. You haven't wasted anyone's time, you are concerned and it's good that they are looking into it. Hope its nothing OP but if it isnt you're in the right place and should get the support you need. Hope your DDs ok.

flutterby77 · 28/06/2016 08:47

Thanks, she's totally fine and checks out completely healthy. They've let us come home overnight on short term leave (keeping her bed open) which I was insistent on as all they were going to do overnight was finger prick bgls which I can do here. If her fasting bgl goes above 6 or post prandial over 8 I have to call them. We are only 10 minutes from the hospital and as her levels have been totally stable all day I felt pretty happy with that. We have to be back at 9.30am for a review with the consultant and a proper blood test to test for diabetes - I can't remember what she called it - auto immune marker something.

I feel like I've worried everyone unnecessarily, my husband is beside himself as he just adores her. I just couldn't live with myself if I have ignored it and it had been something.

We'll see how she goes overnight anyway, maybe we might get some answers tomorrow.

I'm certain that no HCP would think you have worried anyone unnecessarily. You absolutely did the right thing taking her in.

Do they have any idea what might giving her all the symptoms like the hunger and wetting etc if it's not T1 diabetes?

Hope you are holding up ok - very stressful week!

flutterby77 · 28/06/2016 18:13

No, not at all. The symptoms aren't too severe so they think it's possibly just a change in normal for her. Bed wetting possibly stress. All tests over night so far have been normal, just got up for the last one before morning which was 4.3. Battery in the bgl monitor helpfully failed for this one, so had to raid the Apple TV remote which thankfully uses the same type otherwise it would have been a trip back to the hospital. Not so bad for the morning one to go down early if it doesn't last.

Thanks for all the support with this. It's been a bit stressful but good if we can resolve it as I've been so worried.

Ok, just saw the consultant. He thinks the reading was too high to ignore and unlikely the monitor was faulty as all the other readings I've taken with it have been normal. They're doing the test to check average glucose levels over the last few months and an antibody test. He said these tests take a while, anyone know how long? He's seeing us in clinic in 6 weeks to review her and give us results.

He also thinks 50/50 chance of diabetes at this stage. It could be very early which is why the readings are fluctuating.

It must be the antibody test that takes so long. I have the other one (HBA1c) all the time and I usually get a call the next day.

flutterby77 · 29/06/2016 05:00

Thanks apple, that's good to know that one is so quick.

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/06/2016 05:21

The auto antibody yes takes us about 3 months as the samples go to the us from uk to be tested. My two non type one children have it done annually.

ChinchillaFur · 30/06/2016 06:58

T1 Diabetics have the HbA1c test every couple of months. Ours only takes 5 minutes as they have a machine in the clinic. It gives an average BG reading for the last 6-8 weeks.

It could be that she is only in the very early stages, so some days she's making insulin, others she's not. It can take up to 2 years before it stops completely.

Still hoping it's something else for you though. Look after yourself x

flutterby77 · 20/08/2016 05:57

Just an update in case anyone was following this, saw consultant yesterday for a follow up and results of blood testing. She tested totally normal for everything, no signs of diabetes at all. So relieved! They don't know what caused the high reading but are totally happy with her health.
