Toddler has big blister on his willy

My 2yo has a really swollen willy with a big grey blister - it has just come up today and seems to have grown in the last couple of hours. His brother has had chicken pox but this doesn't look like a chicken pox blister. I don't know why this kind of thing always has to happen on a Sunday evening! I'm housebound due to recent foot surgery so I don't know how on earth I will get him to the GPs tomorrow but I'm going to have to get it looked at. Any ideas what might cause this?

An infected spot? Whatever it is I think you need to get him seen by a doctor tomorrow, sooner if he develops a fever. Do you have any family or friends who could help out? Failing that if you explain the situation to the surgery maybe they could send a GP to see him at home?

He needs seeing definitely. It looks similar to a mouth ulcer. I'll get him to the surgery somehow. Fortunately he is showing no signs of fever or illness.

Is he well in himself? Is it painful?

He seems well and it's not troubling him - it doesn't seem to hurt him at all.

I would keep a close eye on it and him. It's probably something minor but if he gets a temp or it keeps growing I would call out of hours (I'm a wound care specialist nurse btw)

He definitely has no temperature and is asleep at the moment. I will have a look in his nappy to see if it's changed size at all.

Ok, it's not got any bigger. The skin around it is slightly red and the blister itself is yellow-grey and flat. It doesn't have the liquidy sort of look that chicken pox does, it looks dry. He stirred while I was changing his nappy but didn't wake (normal for him) so I don't think it could have hurt him or irritated him.

Not sure what it is, but it's best to get it checked...

Hand foot and mouth? They are kind of greyish oval blisters and are often in the nappy area. Does he have any elsewhere?

Alternatively it could be a bacterial infection / balanitis of some kind - make sure the red isn't tracking in a line .

It's really hard to tell if he has anything else on the rest of his body because he had severe eczema which is flaring up at the moment so his skin is red, angry and bumpy all over. The blister stands out to me because of the grey colour but it's possible that what looks like eczema elsewhere on his body is a different sort of rash. His hands, feet and mouth are clear though. I'll call the surgery as soon as they open - if they can give him an appt right at the end of the day then my husband will be back from work and can take him, otherwise I'll have to work out another way to get him there. It hasn't changed appearance overnight and he is still showing no sign of illness. Thanks for all the advice.

To update: he's come out in chicken pox in the past hour so I'm fairly sure this is a funny looking chicken pox blister after all. Will keep an eye on it to see if it shows any worrying signs.

My DH started with chickenpox exactly as the blister you described - same position.
