Nits but only found eggs

Dd1 has nits, well at least I think she does, so did nit comb last night with full marks but only found eggs. Is this normal? Also only in patches not all over. Dd2 didn't have any. Will comb again on Thursday, is there anything else I can do?

Has she had head lice before? Could be empty cases from the last time. You aren't supposed to treat unless you find live lice. Are the eggs white or brown? White means empty and darker ones have lice in them. Maybe comb with conditioner every few days and see if you find anything. If not then it doesn't sound like an active infestation

Yes - what Pixie said. Keep combing. A nice slippery conditioner makes it harder for the louse to bind the eggs on and they come off more easily.

I used to get this a lot - if they caught a big one at school, then it would go round and lay its eggs, and move on, all in the space of a day (the big ones move fast!!!!!)

I also used to get eggs lower down in the hair (not against the scalp) at the back that used to confuse me. Eventually I realised it was because they had probably been laid in the base of a tight, high pony tail.

you can unstick the eggs from the hair shaft by doing the final rinse with wine vinegar and then blow drying. do it on a Friday night as your child WILL smell like a chip shop.

Thanks didn't realise treatment was only for live ones - oh well we're all done now. Am going to be doing nit Sunday from now on Dd1 & Dd2 off to poundland at lunchtime to buy vat of conditioner.

She hasn't had nits before though so am still a bit confused but haven't found live ones on any of us.

trying it could be that you are not used to combing really thoroughly as they are really easy to miss, esp if your child has thick or long hair. If you can see the eggs....they must be there somewhere...keep at it...

The adults don't live very long, anyway. So could have dropped eggs & died. Remove eggs you may avoid any more live ones.

Someone elsethread reckons that Listerine mouthwash, liberally rubbed in, with a shower cap overnight kills off eggs - probably worth experimenting.
