how to get rid of head lice eggs stuck to hair shafts?

I've nuked DS with full marks and I've combed and combed and combed him, but there's loads of eggs (?) still stuck to hairs and I can't shift them.

Any ideas?

You feel achieved when they come out it is very satisfying pull some out with your nails too

WipsGlitter · 03/06/2016 10:58

Hair straighteners won't work as you can't get the plates (hot bit) close enough to the scalp.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 03/06/2016 11:01

You can get a Nitty Gritty comb free on prescription if you ask your GP.

PrincessHairyMclary · 03/06/2016 11:02

I use conditioner and nit comb and then do the eggs with my finger nails if necessary.

Alwayscheerful · 03/06/2016 11:06

coconut oil works too , even better than conditioner, it suffocates any live lice and helps to remove the eggs.

NoahVale · 03/06/2016 11:08

i thought you just had to wait for the hair to grow and be cut

NoahVale · 03/06/2016 11:09

not the live lice i mean the dead egg shells

EvansOvalPies · 03/06/2016 11:11

But if the eggs have hatched, the new lice will lay new eggs close to the scalp, so then it is a never-ending cycle. Wait for them to hatch, hair grows, cut hair, but by then there's a whole new colony.

Or have I misunderstood you?

voodoolooloo · 03/06/2016 11:18

I smothered DDs hair in coconut oil the other day. Warmed it in my hands and almost poured it over. Left it on over night and nitty gritty the next day. Loads of small ones and the shell bits came out.
Nitty gritty has a life time guarantee as well ( or used to). Usually about £9 and worth their weight in gold!

Does your dd not smell like a Bounty though Grin

Lertle · 03/06/2016 11:34

The only thing that's ever worked for my lot is conditioner, loads and loads of it and throughly nit combing every day. I also use a few drops of tea tree oil and lavender oil in their detangling spray which I use all over their hair whilst and after I've styled it

We have serial non treaters at our school too Angry

voodoolooloo · 03/06/2016 18:33

Mrsjay yes, very bounty-ish Grin

Tummyclutter · 03/06/2016 18:47

My first encounter with nits was with DS. I ended up shaving his head really short!
We were over the bathroom sink for ages, he was crying, I was repulsed.

It just seemed the obvious answer Grin

Lertle · 03/06/2016 19:17

Haha that's what I did with my eldest, he had long hair and was riddled, shaved the whole lot off in a number one

(Shame can't really do that with my girls Grin)

pinkrocker · 22/01/2017 23:44

Thanks for all the suggestions! My two came back from EXH this morning very itchy, I've tried Vamousse and it seems to have worked. Almost enough in the can for me as well.
Fingers crossed. 5 mins til I can comb and rinse my own hair....never ever had these before, such a surprise!

Crumbs1 · 22/01/2017 23:59

I've done this so many times for girls with waist length hair. Sit in nice warm bath. Plaster hair in conditioner. Use fine tooth comb - the plastic ones are best as teeth are closer together. Use a bulldog hair clip to pile most hair on top of head. Work through hair a tiny layer at a time. Use big wide spaced comb to detangle first. When they can bear no longer, rehash to get rid of excess conditioner. Let dry naturally whilst continuing to search for any that were missed in good light. A spotlight helps as they are reflective. Repeat nightly until all gone.

Hey ladies,
I don't know if anyone will read this post but I'm in desperate need of some advice regarding nits. I'm not a mum but this seemed the best place to get some genuine advice.
My twin and I caught nits/lice. My sister works in a children's home that obviously hasn't been screen properly Envy -
We both used vamousse and then excessive conditioner and nit combing- using a nitty gritty comb everyday since. My sister doesn't live in the same town as me so she's gone back home and it's hard to nit comb yourself. We think we may have got rid of the nits but getting rid of the eggs is another dilemma and it's hard to see what you're doing- around the back at the typical hard to reach places and such.
Can anyone offer advice if they've had to nit comb themselves and if it's possible to just get everything out with the nitty gritty comb everyday with conditioner - and how do you know they're all gone??
I'm on day 6 now and I'm already sick of it- neither of us had it as kids and mum kept our hair short.
I know this may seem like a weird place to ask but you mums have a trick or two up your sleeves.

Lushmetender · 29/11/2017 19:44

I condition combed as well as used lice stuff my son had loads in the summer and got rid of loads that way.

Lushmetender · 29/11/2017 20:24

For adults if happy to use pesticide type stuff go for malathion based products if still available. I got them somehow on my honeymoon (and they were like elephants by the time I caught them). Those products got rid of it ( standard treatment and then one week later).

The leave in overnight Hedrin lotion is very good. Do it again on day 4. Make sure you dowse the edges of the head all around the borders where the hairline stops. If you have no one to check your hair I would repeat it a 3rd time on day 7 or 8.
The GP might prescribe Derbac M for you if you run into trouble.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 03/12/2017 19:41

Nitty gritty and physically remove remainders with fingers. Do it every day for as long as it takes to be clear. You won't get all the eggs in one session though.
