Overactive thyroid is very scary

My son was recently diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. He is taking pills to slow down his heart rate but he can opt to take a radioactive pill which might cure it. Otherwise he may well be on pills and at risk of heart failure for the rest of his life. I would love to hear from anyone who has faced this decision.

Hi, not my DC, but myself.
I had overactive thyroid, spent a year on Carbimazole whilst awaiting radioactive treatment to kill the gland.
However I came off the carbimazole before the treatment, think you can only take it for 12 months, and subsequent blood tests showed it had corrected itself so didnt go through with treatment.
All was OK for about 10 years but now I have underactive thyroid, it may be that the thyroid gland is damaged.
That's just a tiny tablet every day though and not as scary as being overactive. If he goes through the radioactive treatment then he will need this same tablet every day also.
It's definitely more stressful for your body to be overactive, I was shaky, jittering, sweaty, anxious etc. But if there's a chance it could rectify itself, it might be worth just keeping a close eye with regular blood tests etc?
I would definitely go and see a paediatric specialist in this field though.
