Traace of glucose in urine - what could it mean?

DS is 4 & has had a flu virus for the past week. The doctor requested a urine sample to rule out any secondary infections. They found a trace of glucose in his urine & the doctor has asked for a 2nd sample to rule out diabetes! I am slightly panicking now at the mention of diabetes & need some reassurance that it could just be a one off, or due to a virus, or does this always mean diabetes?

He shouldn't be relying on a urine sample to diagnose diabetes. He needs a finger prick blood sugar done. Diabetes diagnosis should be a same day referral to the hospital.

It has got to be a good thing if they haven't asked for a prick test then?

You can have a trace of glucose in Urine with a urinary tract infection.

Assuming your Dd is a young child you would be thinking type 1 diabetes which is unlikely to be just a trace of glucose, usually much more than a trace. Quite right though to do further tests and be sure.
