DD10 has persistent knee pain, any ideas?

My poor DD has been suffering with knee pain for about 8 weeks now, it hasn't eased off at any point and is possibly getting slightly worse. There has been no obvious initial injury, completely unexplainable, it isn't swollen or red or hot, the knees look no different to one another. Been to a doctor twice, the first one said complete rest for 2 days and to go back if no better. She was off school for those 2 days, it was slightly better she said but she couldn't go on being off school indefinitely! So back to being painful as soon as back. She hasn't been able to do P.E or netball, we have a puppy she has been missing out on walks with, it is starting to get her down now, she is missing out on birthday parties (that have involved trampolines or ice skating).

The pain is always in the same place on her left knee, running round the inner part of knee cap. She got knocked on it accidentally by someone yesterday and was in tears bless her. I wondered about jeuvenile arthiritis as arthiritis runs in family a bit (although not as children) but 2nd doctor ran blood tests and they have come back clear (although I have read somewhere that they can be a false negative sometimes?) so she has referred her to Orthopaedics, I tried to book the appointment and they have said they are fully booked/blocked at the moment so will call when appointments are available! It just sounds like this is going to be a long haul before we get any answers. She was in tears tonight again, would I be really wrong to take her to minor injury clinic at hospital or something and say she has just banged it and it is worse? In the hope they x-ray/scan her straightaway?!

Sorry for the waffly long post! Hope someone may have any thoughts on what this could be...thanks.

Noitsnotteatimeyet your poor dd, hope the exercises help her, such a shame when she was so sporty and actually doing things that were good for her body!

I am off to phone a physio for some advice and book a consuktation, nothing to lose is there, really feel we need another professionals opinion. Thanks so much for replies, good to hear others experiences and opinions.

Thought I would just post the latest...still suffering the same pain, I booked a private physio appointment and he couldn't really diagnose anything, he confirmed the tender area but said nothing felt odd. At the end he looked at her stood straight and said he thought the arch of her foot on the same leg looked collapsed slightly compared to the other one, he suggested we see a podiatrist. On the way home I thought great perhaps that's the answer and we need some special insoles for her shoes for support - problem solved! But having looked at her at home, DH and I aren't convinced they look any different to each other! Does anyone have any experience of seeing a podiatrist? Would it be worth paying to see one?!

Thanks

Yes, we see podiatry, not privately but I pushed for a referral via the G on the NHS. What made the biggest difference was the trainers, but dd has subsequently had inner soles custom made for her.

I guess the physio was suggesting bio mechanical pain from fallen arches?? Kinda where we were with dd, but caused by hypermobility, dd grades her pain from 1 - 10. It's a useful gauge, then get her a good pair of trainers, asics is our favourite. Wear them all the time, instead of school shoes. Give it a few weeks and see if the pain improves?

Podiatry might also suggest some exercise. You could ask your GP for a referral?

Its likely to be her hip that is the problem. Go back to the doctor. They might refer to an orthopaedic doctor, and a physiotherapist.

"Does anyone have any experience of seeing a podiatrist? Would it be worth paying to see one?! "

Yes and yes, they are like magicians.

Ours tests you by watching you walk and stand. Then he presses on certain points up the leg and on the bottom and sure enough they hurt.
Then he changes the way you are standing to mimic the effect of the type of insoles he thinks you need and presses the same places. You say "are you pressing yet?" because it doesn't hurt.
You get the magic insoles and after a few weeks your soft tissue sits slightly differently. This eases some aches and pains and might help your dd.
Podiatry stopped my son and husband's knee pain and is helping with my rotated pelvis (which is causing neck problems)

Does the GP know that you have been unable to book the ortho appointment? If not, call the practice and tell them, if they think it can't wait indefinitely they will be able to get you an appointment. This is something that really needs a medical assessment.

My teen has JIA. Hers is enthesitis related arthritis. Her form is the tendon sheaths swelling.

No blood tests picked hers up. So it's possible that if she does have it that a negative blood test is possible.

Hers was found by a gene marker. HLA b27. And her enthesitic points showed up on mri.

My daughters form is genetic. However there isn't a history of arthritis in our family.

I am remarried with a one year old. So keeping an eye on him as much as possible.

PitilessYank · 25/02/2016 21:20

So she hasn't had an x-ray? Lord knows we over-test here in the US, and I do respect the NHS's sensible approach, but at 8 weeks I would want an x-ray to assure myself that it wasn't something surprising like a mass. I don't mean to frighten you, that is very unlikely, but worth ruling out in young people with bone/joint pain.

MothersAreLikebuttons · 25/02/2016 21:47

Not all joint problems show on X-ray. Some only show on palpating and others on MRI or CT.

It might be a muscular injury which can take a long time to heal.

Unsure why they aren't referring you to paeds.

I took my daughter to a chiropractor when I was fighting for answers.

I hope you get some soon.

Thanks everyone, only just had chance to check MN as been at hospital with DH (that's another story!). Thanks again for all your suggestions and thoughts. I will phone GP again and let them know I haven't been able to book hospital appointment yet and see what they say, also I will ask if she can be referred to a podiatrist anytime soon!
