13 year old daughter poorly can just look straight ahead

Sorry, hope you don't mind. Just worried about our daughter who is 13. She told me this morning (7:30 am) she had been awake every hour coughing (has a sore throat and I hear an odd cough) but that she could only look ahead, it was sore to look up,down, left or right.
I asked her at 12:20 and she says she has to close her eyes or its too sore, she can still only look straight ahead.
What on earth could it be? I don't really get headaches much, could it be a migrane? Has anyone any clue what it could be?

I'm sure you'll keep checking on her tonight.

bkgirl · 27/01/2016 09:58

Update: she has continued with the same symptoms (sore to move eyes around, only comfortable staring forward even when eyes are shut and sore neck, sore throat and occasional cough). She had a bad night again and in addition she feels queasy when she stands up. She said she feels to hot and her forehead is burning but I took her temp and it's 37.9
Daughter is extremely studious and is very annoyed she is missing school. I have got an appointment with gp at 3pm. I have her lying in bed, have given her sudafed (doc at hospital said it was coming from sinus) - she still isn't using her mobile phone.

If you are at all worried I wouldn't hes to take her back to a and e. You know her best. Not everyone gets all the symptoms of meningitis. There was s thread yesterday where a mnetter sadly explained her daughter died as she got the rash too late, though had other symptoms. Glad you have an appointment later though.

bumbleymummy · 27/01/2016 11:44

I would take her back again. Hope you get some answers soon. It does sound worrying.

CocktailQueen · 27/01/2016 11:48

Doesn't sound like meningitis to me if it's sore to move her eyes but she's not light-sensitive.

If it's sorer when she looks down, could be blocked sinuses putting pressure on her eyes.

Is she drinking enough? Eating anything? Sounds horrible, and you did the right thing in taking her to be seen. Take her back again if you're still worried/things don't improve.

I hope she's better soon.

bkgirl · 27/01/2016 11:51

Thanks :)
temp is no 39.3 :( long as it's not meningitis, she tried to stand up but felt really sick.
it will be a long wait till 3pm, god knows how she will get in the car... sorry for moaning!

Don't want to worry you, but I'd still look at meningitis, viral rather than bacterial, which is the slow form.

Rash is very late on symptoms, so certainly don't rely on that. I know because ds used to regularly get viral rashes that didn't fade under pressure so I had discussions about how to spot if it was actually meningitis. Although they always tested him for it when he presented with the rash, they said they were 99% certain that he didn't because he was visibly well.

My friend who had viral meningitis met her children from school, having walked there, and wandered down to the GP 4 hours later because she already had an appointment at that time. She didn't feel, or look that bad. Although she did say to me at school "I wonder if I've meningitis". I was quite impressed she'd diagnosed herself, although she said later she thought she was being over dramatic.

However the other thought I had was glandular fever. That would go with the sore throat and neck. When I had it my glands were up badly and I had a really sore neck-to the point I went and spent my student money that week on a soft pillow.

Can she move her neck up and down?

SueDunome · 27/01/2016 11:58

I would go straight back and get a second opinion.

bkgirl · 27/01/2016 12:04

just phoned gp practice and told them about the rise in temp and increased sickness they said come on in...she is getting dressed...

When DS had pneumonia he felt dizzy and sick when standing up, to the point of vomitting and passing out. If, as you say, she's got a bit of an odd cough, that's something to ask the doctor about as well? All the best.

CocktailQueen · 27/01/2016 12:18

Can she touch her chin to her chest?

Good idea to take her back to the GP.

My boyfriend died of pneumococcal meningitis. He had no rash or stiff neck. He had flu-like symptoms, a headache and a fever, yet felt cold.

The GP did a home visit, diagnosed flu. It wasn't.

notapizzaeater · 27/01/2016 12:27

Glad you are going to the doctor now

bumbleymummy · 27/01/2016 12:27

Glad they're seeing you earlier.

LiquorsOnDeck · 27/01/2016 14:03

Hope she is ok

bkgirl · 27/01/2016 15:18

Thanks all. So sorry CocktailQueen, that is just awful. She can touch her chin to her chest and isn't light sensitive thankfully. The fever sickness seems to be coming and going.
Doc explained the symptoms overlap other conditions such as flu. She thinks it could be a virus/the flu but we need to keep an eye on her and see how it goes, any other symptoms/it worsens come back and she is working tonight. The doc seemed thorough and said we did the right thing coming in....sent for a few tests in the treatment room. The doc also told me to give her ibrprofen, she managed to eat something first (a little) and it has brought the temp down.
Thanks for all your help/advice.

Good - glad you took her back in. Hope she improves soon. There are lots of nasty bugs going around.
