Persistent Oral Thrush

My 5 week old dd has had oral thrush for about 3 weeks and it is making feeding times a real struggle. She is currently on her second prescription for nystatin but the problems persist, namely white patches on tongue, pain whilst feeding etc. Is there anyone whose little ones have suffered similar and how did you get rid of it?

Thanks in advance.

Are you being treated too?

Are you breastfeeding? If so, wash your bras in vinegar daily.

Give all dummies and bottles a sterilise frequently.

Nystatin is shit. You can buy oral Daktarin gel (different to Daktarin nipple cream on prescription) and you can buy it over the counter.

Do NOT take your baby with you to buy it, it's a thick gel like substance and due to one person not applying it properly they don't sell it to children under 3 months any more - but it's the best thing. Just get a little bit on a clean finger and apply and rub in.

If the Daktarin doesn't clear it up go to GP if you are breastfeeding and get nipple cream and tablets.

Thanks so much for the replies. Unfortunately, she's no longer breast feeding but I am sterilising teets and dummies round the clock.

I did not know the gel was available behind the counter so that's good to know. I've been told to finish the nystatin before the Dr will prescribe Daktarin gel. It's nearly finished thankfully so if all else fails, I'll go to the chemist.

I was on antibiotics late on in my pregnancy which gave me thrush but I had no idea my baby could get it. Live and learn I suppose.

Probiotics for your baby, she will have colonised her gut from your bacteria. Find someone who will test her gut bacteria once this clears up and help you repair it. The gut feeds the immune system, it needs to be healthy.
