Strange noise when coughing, croup?

Ds (6) started losing his voice yesterday afternoon, his tonsils were swollen but no other obvious symptoms of anything, he said he had a bit of phlegm at back of throat so just thought it's another virus.
He woke with a high temp but saying he was cold, gave calpol that seemed to take ages to kick in but the thing that's worrying me is the noise he makes when he coughs it's kind of like a dry bark
Is it worth a trip to GP?

I had the flu and whooping cough vaccines a few days ago so just wondered whether there could be a connection (didn't give ds flu nasal spray this year as its made his quite poorly for the previous 2 years, I've only had it as I'm pregnant)

Certainly worth going to your GP
In the mean time, you may find that being in a steamy room helps. Try sitting in the bathroom with the shower or bath running hot so that there is plenty of steam.
This sort of croup-y type thing is very common but can very occasionally be more serious so always worth checking it out.
How is he generally? Can you see his ribs more clearly when he breathes in? As if the skin is being pulled in between the ribs or up around his throat? These are signs it MAY be something a bit more

not likely to be related to you having your vaccines.

I'd question you not giving him the flu vaccine though, him being ill afterwards could have been a coincidence or if it was that which made him poorly then full blown flu could be much worse for him. I'd ask you to discuss it with your doctor when he's better.

and agree with op about his current cough.

Thanks for replies, will get him to the GP!

MigGril The flu vaccine was optional and I chose not to this year, definitely wasn't a coincidence re him being poorly on previous vaccines and my concern is that it only protects against one strain of flu so he will still need to have it every year, when he was younger I was happy for him to have it as his immune system was building up but I don't feel it necessary for him to have it now as his immune system is good I feel - this is the first virus/cold he's had all year. If I wasn't pregnant I wouldn't have had it either.
Btw I'm not totally anti vaccine, he's had all the usual ones just don't agree with this one every single year in an otherwise healthy child.

The flu vaccine usually contains several strains (I'd have to look up how many they add) and as I've seen even a very healthy full grown man floored by it is never take it lightly.
Most people who say they have flu don't you really can't walk around with flu. If my DD who's 8 was elliagable for the vaccine she would have it. But there aren't even any local private clinics round hear.
