I took DS2 to the doctors but didn't get any answers. I have been lathering Epaderm on for a few days but not noticed any improvement. He complains it hurts, but is Autistic and has a speech delay so he can't communicate that well so not sure if it is itchy.

Was wondering if anyone has an idea what it could be?

I was coming on to say Hand, Foot and Mouth!

Both my DCs had it (different times, 3 years apart). But both had peeling skin on fingers and nails 2-3 weeks after the blisters and ulcers cleared up. I was so worried with DC1 that it was something sinister. As it seemed a long time after HFM, so I didn't think they were related and neither did the GP. However, the exact same thing happened to DC2. And for me it's just too unlikely to be a coincidence.

My DD, who is now 7, has had the same thing for years and nobody can tell me what causes it

MissMoo22 · 04/11/2015 11:54

Looks like Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis which someone else has said. My eldest has had it for years. There's nothing for it, just moisturiser. It can get really bad and sore but usually causes no problems apart from being unsightly.

RealHuman · 04/11/2015 12:11

"Idiopathic Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis" = "dodgy skin on the soles of children's feet and we don't know why". In Latin. As far as I can tell, translating descriptions of manky skin diseases is 50% of dermatology. The other 50% being "let's try steroids" Wink

Thanks all. DS2 still has it, DS1 hasn't had so much as a tiny peel so far and he had HF&M a week after DS2. I have been told since that it will be the HF&M but he has had it now for over 2 weeks.

Those who said their children had the same thing after HF&M, how long did it last for? He no longer complains it hurts all the time, but still complains when you touch his toes. He also now has a nasty cough which is why we are up now, so wondering if it is worth getting him seen again tomorrow by a doctor to get another opinion on his toes and get him checked over as I looked in his throat and he has 1 white spot on his tonsil. Will check to see if anymore appear between now and the doctors opening.

The athletes foot stuff hasn't helped at all. Nor the Epaderm. It also has started to peel down the sole of both feet under the big toe now, too.

Poor kid hasn't had any luck since starting Reception in September Sad it has been one thing after another.

Ah, poor thing Sad. I think it was a good few weeks that the peeling went on for. Hard to remember as it was a few years ago now. Toe nails fell off too or went very thin and peely. How are his toenails?

TillITookAnArrowToTheKnee · 13/11/2015 16:26

DD1s feet went like this about a month after she had hand foot and mouth. Constant peeling for weeks, it was on her hands too, but didnt cause her any pain.

My son got this in summer. I put it down to wearing shoes a lot. Before that he was mainly barefoot. I just made sure he had bare feet or cotton socks. Leather shoes for school and put newspaper in them over night to dry them out. He does have sweaty feet so I put it down to that .

Straitjacket · 14/11/2015 11:29

His toenails do seem to be thinner but they haven't started coming off yet. So still could be the HF&M then? I will give it another couple of weeks and see how he goes.

He has properly fitted leather shoes as he has a high instep (H), but he doesn't like having shoes on so takes them off whenever he has the chance. Even in school. I have had to go in at pick up to put his shoes back on a few times as he just kept taking them back off when the TA tried too. I will try putting newspaper inside at night and see if it makes any kind of difference.

Thank you Flowers

DS had this, peeling toes and then one by one his fingernails fell off. I was horrified. We had a referral to a paediatrician who was equally stumped, raft of bloods, all normal. Then his toenails fell off too. Eventually we linked it to a month earlier illness which we though was going to be chicken pox (a few blistery spots) but which also had him really poorly with a horribly high temp. I think it was HF&M, it was everywhere at the time and it fits with the toes. This was 18 months ago.
