Sudden rash

Hi all. My 7 month old boy has suddenly developed this rash. This morning it was just on on his chest but this evening it had spread around his side and half way across his back. Both me, his dad and older brother have issues with our skin but this came on so suddenly I am concerned. I would normally take him to the doctors first thing tomorrow but as its Saturday tomorrow I can't and I don't want to waste an out of hours call out if it's not necessary. Maybe a trip to the drop in centre? Anyone seen anything like this before? Thanks in advance :-)

Do you have pets?

I wonder if he has had a few flea bites and is reacting to them?

can you put some anti-histamine cream on it?

I wouldn't be worrying about OOH this evening, but may well pitch up at the walk in centre in the morning.

is he well in himself?

LisaM81 · 23/10/2015 22:06

Thanks for the reply. Yes we have 3 cats but are regularly treated (but I know they could still get fleas). We don't have any antihistamine cream but could always get some. He seems ok mostly but has moments of crying and being very fussy and clingy but we put that down to teething. Now I'm not too sure but could be over thinking it.

No, its a worry and you need to find out what it is, only takes one flea to get stuck in a vest - i did take my DD to the DRs years ago only for him to say it was flea bites. I was mortified but i had cats and cats still pick up fleas despite being treated.

of course it probably isn't fleas :) But it does look like an allergy type thing, especialy as it came up quickly. Could be a teething rash? is his temperature up?

Calpol and anti-histamine cream i think, but might be an idea to check with the pharmacist if he is young.

GinGinGin · 23/10/2015 22:13

Looks like hives or an allergic reaction to something. A rule of thumb I tend to use when I'm not sure if my child is ill is to check whether or not they have a temp, if they don't then it's likely not to be anything to worry about (unless of course it's an anaphylactic shock, but then that would be pretty obvious!).

LisaM81 · 23/10/2015 22:22

Yeah if it was that I think we would be on our way to A&E and not on here asking questions! He doesn't feel like he has a temperature but I haven't actually taken it yet. He is asleep now so I will leave it until he wakes. Fingers crossed it is nothing. Thanks for the replies :-)

Looks like it could be shingles, call your GP tomorrow, if he's not too poorly with it. Most practices will have a message about how to contact the local out of hours service. Unless he has any other health issues, usually just treated with paracetamol and/or calamine. Out of hours may be able to advise you what to do over the phone if he's fairly well in himself. Obviously call for advice earlier if you're worried about him or he seems to be getting more unwell!

AnotherTimeMaybe · 24/10/2015 10:57

Because you are talking about a baby here I'd take him to A&E
Doesn't look like gives to me, I'd personally would want to see a doctor

Good luck hope he gets better

Phone 111 and get a chat with nurse/ooh appt.

0ddsocks · 24/10/2015 13:28

I'm another vote for shingles perhaps. Has he has chickenpox ?

TheBakeryQueen · 24/10/2015 13:34

My first thought was shingles too.

Hope you've seen a doctor already! Hope your little boys is ok.

LisaM81 · 24/10/2015 14:43

This morning his first tooth appeared so I'm hoping it's a side effect of that. The rash hasn't got any bigger or changed much over night. He seems better in himself other than hungry so I'm hoping the sore tooth may have caused his appetite to dip and is now back.
He hasn't had chicken pox however the rash isn't sporting but I am keeping an eye on it.
Thanks for all the concern :-)

I took him to the doctors this morning and it's shingles. B*gger! Nothing we can do other than calpol and wait for him to get over it. Thanks for all the concern.
