Would you give a 10yr old ordinary neurofen/paracetamol

My DD is 10 (will be 11 in March). She has started complaining of headaches relatively frequently. When she gets them I give her 10ml of calprofen (the stated dose) which sometimes helps and sometimes doesn't.

I remember having the same when I was a similar age; so much so that my mum took me to the doctor. At the time I think u was 11 as my mum used to give me half a paracetamol to try and help. I remember the doctor saying to my mum that I should try having a whole tablet. Well that helped and eventually the headaches stopped although I'm not sure whether it was the tablets or a placebo affect.

Would I be wrong to try giving DD 'adult' headache remedies (obviously not super strength ones) and see if that helps or should I continue with the children's calprofen/calpol?

Ps at the moment I'm hoping the cause is just hormonal given similar happened to me at a similar age but of course happy to be told she needs to be seen by a doctor.

Paracetamol dose is calculated by weight.
Speak to a pharmacist.

The paracetamol tablets I have give a dose for children age 6-11 (half to 1 tablet up to 4 times a day). They are 500mg caplets

Half a tablet really isn't much at all unless your dd is tiny. It's worked out on weight.

My DDs take paracetamol tablets, youngest now 11. 1 tablet is the same as 2 spoons of paracetamol liquid. (ie 250mg per 5ml spoon, 1 tablet is 500mg)

Elnemo · 21/10/2015 22:36

Ordinary paracetomal tablets here since DD old enough to swallow tablets (about age 5 ). just dose to equivalent dose in liquid mixture ie one half of a 500mg tablet

Yes, have I missed something? Weight appropriate dose.

cestlavielife · 22/10/2015 11:47

it's by weight.
keep a headache diary for a month and take to gp . if it's consistent and affecting school attendance ask for referral to local headache clinic. there are preventive meds that can be taken.
