Please help 10 weeks of Diarrhea!

1 week before my boy's first birthday he got the runs- no biggie (I thought) everything goes in his mouth and we'd just got back from Spain so I didn't fret that he had picked up a bug.

... 10 weeks on and we still are having 3-4 explosions a day!

I have:

  • Taken him off dairy (6weeks now) his poo no longer smells of cheese and his eczema has totally cleared but no change other than that.
  • I have started giving him Pro-biotic drops (1week now)- no change
  • I have taken him to the docs and they have tested his poo twice and it has come back clear of any parasites etc.

He is:

  • Fat (doesn't seem to have lost weight during the past 10 weeks) but looks like a nice podgy 14 month old.
  • crap at night (wakes with tummy ache and painful wind) infacol helps.
  • always hungry. His poo looks pretty similar to it did on the way in- I can identify which meal it is! He is obviously not getting the benefit from his food as it passes through him so all he wants to do is eat.

I don't know where to go from here! Although he is podgy, I worry such a long time without getting what he needs from his food will cause long-term damage or stunt his growth.

Does this story sound familiar to anyone? I could really do with knowing whee to go from here!

Thank you
Lyd

Undigested food and not being absorbed can be a sign of coeliac disease, the bowel shuts down so food just passes straight through. People will say they have to lose weight but with CD it can be weight loss or weight gain, constipation or diarrhea, it can also be classed as malabsorption. I would press with the GP for some routine bloods and monitor if any foods make it better or worse.
Does he drink a lot of water or juice as this can upset tummys too?

Ezandrow · 18/09/2015 22:34

Oh no, mixed feelings about that nappyqueen. I want to get to the bottom of it and I'd do anything to make him feel better but I was really hoping it would be a temporary intolerance. We have coeliac disease in my family, my Mum, nephew and cousin have it. I'd dismissed it as he didn't have the classic body shape- stick thin with big bloated tummy.

He drinks plenty of water but not to much and I don't give him juice.

With coeliac in the family it s clear he needs testing.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/09/2015 22:43

I was going to say coeliac too.

also, if taking him.off dairy helped maybe he's still reacting to soya?

although it's not clear if ever there was an intolerence or allergy to dairy, many who are allergic /intolerant to the protein in milk are also allergic /intolerant to soya.

Saltedcaramel4 · 18/09/2015 22:58

Yes celiac was the first thing that popped into my mind

Undigested food is the hallmark of 'toddler diarrhoea' which is v common and harmless

Have you just given him clear fluids only for 24 hours? DSis had a stomach bug with diarrhoea for 6 weeks and it only went when she fasted for 24 hours.

Thank you all for your wisdom. There is lots to think about. Having researched TD, it sounds like a possibility but he does get nasty stomach cramps, which doesn't seem to fit. I am increasing the fat in his diet and am going to try a GF diet for 1 week and will see how it goes.

Is he getting too much fruit? Fructose gives some children explosive diahhorea. Did you start eating more fruit over the summer with the glut of seasonal stuff and then keep it up because he likes it? Some people have a kiwi every day in lieu of laxatives. It's something to consider.

RubySparks · 20/09/2015 08:54

You need to get blood test to check for coeliac before going gluten free otherwise test ,as not give the correct result!

RomComPhooey · 20/09/2015 08:55

Yep, definitely don't go gluten free before the blood test - it can cause a false negative result.

RubySparks · 20/09/2015 08:56

*may not give correct results!

slkk · 20/09/2015 09:06

My nephew aged 22 months had about 12 weeks of on off diarrhoea and got weak and stopped walking etc eventually. Finally got referred to hospital for tests and has coeliac. Worth pushing for a test especially if it is in the family before it affects growth and development.

cestlavielife · 20/09/2015 23:32

Don't go gf until you had the coeliac blood test

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 20/09/2015 23:41

Watching with interest. I could have written your opening post.

13 months old. I don't remember the last solid poo I changed (at least ten weeks ago). Tried lactose free. Tested negative for parasites. Chunky baby...

Ezandrow · 21/09/2015 09:27

^ hello. Does your baby have stomach cramps at night? Last night was the worst ever for us. I had to "sleep" next to him and constantly rub his tummy, he'd wriggle and cry until he farted then go to sleep, repeat every half hour ALL night!

This is why I thing TD doesn't fit.

Too much fructose gives a colicky belly and wind, as well as explosive bowel movements. What's his fruit/juice intake like?

Ezandrow · 21/09/2015 14:39

I don't ever give him juice, only water and milk. I very occasionally get him a pure pouch to keep him quiet in the buggy and sometimes add apple purée to his porridge. Other than that he eats the whole fruit, he is a big banana fan.

The boy just did his first 3D poo in months! It was OATS! I took him off oat milk 2 days ago and replaced it with rice milk, stopped giving him porridge and he is like a different baby. He has his sparkle back! It might be a fluke so I'm not getting too carried away. I'm going to give him a chance to get fully better then try him with a little wheat again, it could be both but it could just be the oats.
