What's biting/irritating 4yo dd.

Dd1 4yo is regularly getting 'bitten' by something in the house. I say bitten but it is actually a small white lump which is itchy no visible 'puncture' mark like you would from a flea bite. Dd2 nor dp or I have anything similar at all. It's not specific to any particular room either.

Initially we thought it may be something in her bath as she also has eczema but then it seemed to happen at other times too. I have hoovered and dusted her bedroom so many times and can't find anything. It's starting to become very frustrating and dd is obviously being irritated by something I need suggestions!

Is it just one lump? Is it always in same area?

DeathMetalMum · 05/09/2015 20:44

Is mostly on her torso but occasionally as and legs too and once or twice on her face. Just one lump but can be several at once, so maybe one on her back and another on her arm or top and bottom of the back so not near each other particularly.

I was thinking of keratosis pilaris as my DD has that but thinking not now. Could they be cysts or something? Or allergic to something?
I would make a GP appointment and get them checked out when she gets them. I wouldn't have thought they were bites being white though.
Hope you get some more suggestions.

Thanks they don't really last very long usually gone by the next day/morning. I would say they are just raised lumps rather than white but look slightly paler than her skin normally. Similar to a nettle sting.

I have just looked at keratosis pilaris and it's not that but thank you.

midges? I have started reacting to midge bites really badly - just one bite will make the whole of my head itch and they don't come up red they just come up as lumps under the skin ...if I get one bite say on my head it makes the whole of my head itch...and the bite site will drive me insane (I have drawn blood and they continue itching for a few days)
I discovered this after I found we had them in a pot plant ..it was a chilli plant that someone had given DP and he kept it nice and moist, tended it with loving care ...before I finally refused to have it in the house anymore and threw it out I tied a plastic bag over it to try and contain them and it was full (which is when DP agreed it had to go).

Could it be hives? Too much juice or fruit?

ziggyziggy · 05/09/2015 21:39

it does sound like hives to me, they can come and go very quickly

often the cause can't be determined but it might be a slight allergy or raised histamine levels or something if it is that.

DeathMetalMum · 05/09/2015 21:46

Could be a midge bite possibly but haven't seen anything flying around and no plants in the house as I just seem to kill them. It also seems to be when she has clothes on so the area is covered but not immediately after she has put them on. I don't think it's hives dd had a hives reaction when she was a baby and it was far more noticible than this. Sometimes I have to look v closely to find it when dd is showing me.

I had tought it possibly could be a reaction to carpet beetle lavae after some google searches, but can't find any evidence of larvae. I have seen one or two carpet beetles on windowsils in the last 12 months ish bit nothing else. Pluse I would have thought excessive hovering and damp dusting would have helped with that.

Carpet beetles...oh no! Sad
Whether they are causing the reaction or not you need to take the fact you have seen the beetles very seriously.
I have been fighting them for the last 10 or so years. They are almost indestructible. (I had a couple of larvae in two sealed plastic food boxes - used for experimenting - eg if lavender or cedar oil repelled/killed them (it doesn't), forgot about them for months - without any food or water and they were still alive..).
I haven't tried the full on chemical approach because I have DCs etc but I have tried everything else - including sticky traps under things and diatomaceous earth on the carpet edges behind things
I saw one or two beetles on the window sills, didn't know what they were and assumed they had come in - not trying to get out. Working full time etc I had a bag in DD1s wardrobe that I was putting clothes in for the charity shop as she grew out of them. Probably sat there for a year ...I then got round to sorting it out and it was infested with larvae. Got rid of it, tidied around thought that was that ...next year I started seeing more beetles on the windows. I have been through every article of clothing and washed then ironed /tumble dried them. I have culled bedding and towels etc to the bare minimum -kept in sealed plastic boxes. All clothes that aren't regularly worn are in sealed bags or vac bags - even things like (dark) winter socks are in sealed plastic bags over the summer. That is more to prevent them damaging clothes - and that has worked. I did have serious damage (my wool cashmere coat was wrecked) but also used to find tiny little holes in things - usually dark ones, not necessarily all natural fibres -and that seems to have stopped.
I still find them now ...this year I have seen two on the window sill, a couple of biggish larvae -and lots of tiny larvae on one of the sticky traps. I found a dead beetle surrounded by eggs on a plastic bag of clothes...

I have hoovered every inch and washed and steamed carpets - more than once - the only place I haven't been though is the attic and under the floor boards.... I did find quite a few in a rolled up carpet offcut under the stairs but that was a good 5 yrs ago.
Sorry rant - take it seriously - try and find the source now...look through everything and if you don't mind using chemicals use them.

I think the sticky traps are fantastic - sold as 'spider traps' or something - and they do get the odd spider Sad - (usually massive ones -be wary of pulling out from under somewhere dark if you don't want a nasty shock -and they do feel a bit cruel) but they will let you see if you do have more around than you think...
Good luck - hopefully you can get on top of them before they get a hold....
