Lactose intolerant 16 month old, need advice on milk substitute!

Hi ???? my little girl is 16 months old, has been on lactose free formula since 8 weeks old. I have recently started introducing small amounts of dairy products into her diet but she got violently sick after cows milk. She dislikes the taste of soya milk so I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a nutritious substitute to both that I could try?? Thanks in advance! ????

Lacto free mill would see the obvious answer Hmm

We use lactofree.

Stompylongnose · 29/08/2015 19:07

Lactofree tastes like cows milk so is a great substitute for the whole family.
Some children won't go straight from cow's milk based formula to cows milk so you might have to offer a formula/milk mixture and gradually increase the milk percentage.

Do you know it is lactose she has issues with rather than milk protein? A lot of the LF formulas also have the protein broken down, and protein I to,earn enough is much more common than lactose intolerance.
My son was CMPI and we used calcium supplemented oat milk. You could also try coconut or almond milk. None of them have enough protein/fat to be the main drink for a child under two, but our dietician was happy that we increased protein/fat from elsewhere. I was still breastfeeding but needed something to be a drink whilst I was working and to cook with. Is there a reason to discontinue the formula? You'd probably be better continuing with that for another year.

Thank you all for your suggestions ???? the reason I was looking for a substitute instead of continuing with formula is because my daughter won't drink the formula from anything but the bottle for me, she has her cup for water with a straw as she refused to use a sippy cup but would not take her formula from it and the doctor has asked to stop using her bottle before 18 months. .....

Oat milk is typically recommended for dairy free toddlers.
If just lactose free, go for lactofree milk, as above.

koko milk is good

We've used oat milk for years, the girls love it as it's slightly sweet too xxx

Can anyone suggest alternatives for yogurts/cheese? I've got another thread going about a possible temporary lactose intorlance going on in my 16mo following a virus.

Also how did you all know they were lactose intolerant? We've had frequent (6-8 loose nappies per day) for over a week now and I'm planning on going back to GP next week so any advice would be appreciated!

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/08/2015 20:57

approach yogurts are quite nice.

forget about cheese vegan cheese is vile so buy the lactose free if it's Just the lactose that's the problem

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/08/2015 20:58

alpro ffs phone

Joneseygirl77 · 29/08/2015 21:01

Can you also give alpro milk to toddlers?

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/08/2015 21:03

That's what I gave dd. The alpro junior plus. but she was one of the lucky cmpi lids who were ok with soya.

so if lactose is the problem alpro will be fine. If it's the protein in the milk they may also react to the soya

trinitybleu · 30/08/2015 11:55

Lactofree do yogur, cheese, all sorts. All tastes like normal and much nicer than soya alternatives. As long as you're sure it's lactose that's the issue i.e. she's had a reducing sugars test
