Hello all,

So we took our 8 month old down to my in laws for a couple weeks, and whilst she was there she began with diarrhea -not necessarily runny all the time, but very frequent -we're getting through about 10 - 15 nappies in 24 hours. She's pooping when she wakes in the night (which she does anyway) and sometimes only half an hour after the last one. She is also teething like crazy -no teeth yet but they look very close and think she may be cutting one now, she is always drooling and biting things. She also gets very red and sore on her bum, poor baby.
Originally I thought she has picked up a bug, and I thought I'd wait it out as she didn't appear ill otherwise -very lively, into everything, taking her bottles, though perhaps a bit more fussy with food. However it's not gone - so I've booked a doc appointment on Mon but I thought I would ask on here as I have heard diarrhea can be linked to teething. But does this sound like it could possible just be that!? I am curious as to whether anyone else's baby on here has had this.
(P.s there's not been any change in diet)

Thanks in advance for reading!

We're going through similar at the moment with our 16mo dd. She's got 15 teeth though and is cutting 3 canines and back molars are on the move. We've had dreadful nappies- 6/8 per day which is lots more than normal. We've got a very red and sore bottom too. This all started last week but she did have a bug with v high temps. Drs asked for a sample and it's come back clear so they think it's been a bug and teeth. I have been prescribed timodine for nappy rash to help though. They told me as long as she was eating/drinking ok and bright then not to worry.

It's not diarrhea though- more just v loose nappies which stink to high heaven!

We're also doing lots of nappy free, changing her as soon as she has pooed and bathing her in the am and pm to ensure she is clean. Oh and making sure her bum is bone dry before her nappy goes on.

Hope the teeth cut soon.

Not the same age and not teething, but DD2 caught a bug at 4 months and diarrhoea didn't go away. Our GP suggested lactose intolerance and she stopped having diarrhoea within a few hours of starting lactose free formula.

Lactose intolerance happens when the gut temporarily loses the ability to make lactase, so lactose isn't broken down and absorbed. Instead it acts like a laxative and draws water into the poo on the way through.

Pico is your dc still lactose intolerant? I'm now starting to think that's what we've got as it's not getting any better.

No - I gave it 4 weeks and then switched her back to normal formula over the course of about 4 days. Some internet sources suggest 2 weeks, others 4, but it is definitely temporary. It is sometimes called secondary lactose intolerance.

My DD was diagnosed by our GP, my mum took her in and suggested that it might be lactose intolerance. The GP also phoned a paediatrician at our local hospital to get some advice. But if it happens again I'll just give it a go on lactose free formula to see if that fixes it. We got SMA lactose free as soya formula isn't recommended as a first line alternative to normal formula. It was about £6 for a half size tin and we got it from Boots/Ocado as our local massive Tesco didn't stick it.

Joneseygirl77 · 29/08/2015 20:50

I have heard it can be temporary. I've eliminated all dairy now but we've still have 6 poos today but they seem a bit better. Less of it and more solid! I've also read that it can take a week for the body to eliminate lactose from it.

Are you just using formula? I'm after suggestions for whole milk.

Yes, DD is 7 months, so still on formula. Sorry, I didn't notice you weren't the OP, so wouldn't be giving formula still as your DD is older. I wouldn't touch the lactose free formula for an older child if I could avoid it as it is very sweet and full of glucose.
