Milk residue on the tongue

My baby is 3 weeks old and has a lot of milk residue on her tongue. We have tried cleaning it off using water and a clean cloth but it doesn't seem to come off. Does anyone have any tips on how to reduce it?

It has never occurred to me to try and remove it to be honest! Why do you want to get rid of it?
Having said that... is your baby breastfed or bottle fed? Persistent white tongue can sometimes be a sign of thrush in a breastfed baby.

She is bottled fed. We have tried to remove it as her tongue is very white and people have commented on it

It won't be causing her any problems, I really wouldn't worry about it. All babies have milky tongues!

I would ask the midwife or GP to take a look. It could be thrush.

MerryMarigold · 22/08/2015 21:47

I was going to say it may be thrush too, so get it looked at. But my babies had white tongues too...there is a difference with thrush, can't remember what it is though.

My baby has this and midwife advised to give her a small drink of boiled, cooled water.

Make sure it's not thrush first though, your health visitor/GP will be able to tell.

I have some sort of geographic tongue that often looks white and so have my dds, don't understand why it's an issues so long as baby doesn't have thrush?

MerryMarigold · 23/08/2015 09:19

What's a geographic tongue?!!

Picklesauage · 23/08/2015 11:23

Thrush! I thought the same recently and mentioned it to a medical friend who said thrush. We got oral treatment and it vanished in a day!

Thrush, see your GP.
