Tonsillitis

Hi, I don't normally ask for help on these sites, so you can tell I must be at my wits end. My nearly 2 year old was diagnosed with tonsillitis yesterday and given antibiotics and we were told to give regular doses of calpol and nurofen, which we are doing. He's stopped eating, which I can understand if his throat is sore, but he's also not drinking a lot. He is very thirsty but won't drink much as that hurts him too. We are putting his milk and water in the fridge as that seems to help but he's still hardly drinking. He just seems constantly in pain and won't settle. He's screaming and crying most of the time and he's biting us a lot as he's obviously in a lot of pain ???? He's also having a lot of dirty nappies (poo, hardly any wee) so I think all the calpol and nurofen might be upsetting his tummy too. Is this something that we're just going to have to get through, or has anyone else had anything similar? Please help, we don't know what to do to help him ????

I'm really not sure I'm much help but didn't want to leave your post unanswered.

He seems to be in an awful lot of pain if he's biting you, I'm assuming that's not normal behaviour for him? If things are so extreme I'd suggest going back to the Drs and getting them to check him over again. Tonsillitis is very uncomfortable but being so painful he's biting and screaming out seems beyond that. Or perhaps I've just not experienced really bad tonsillitis?

No idea if it will work but have you tried ice lollies?

I'm so sorry that I don't have any practical advice. Really hope he gets better soon and you get some rest/peace of mind.

DD ended up briefly in hospital around that age with tonsillitis. They gave her an anesthetic spray for her throat which normally isn't for children that young.
It might be worth contacting your Dr and explaining that your DS isn't drinking and you're worried about dehydration, see if they can do anything similar.

And do keep an eye out for the symptoms of dehydration. Don't be afraid to raise it.
