What is this on my 10mo finger? (Picture included)

This appeared probably about three months ago. I thought it was a spot initially, and then a hang nail but it just hasn't gone away. Occasionally the top comes off and a little puss and then blood comes out but then it just goes back to what it looks like now. I asked the HV but she said no idea, next time you're at the GP's just ask. But I don't just visit the GP any old time, so I've not been in there since. Should I make an appointment? I'm worried it's a bit pfb to have a whole appointment for it when it doesn't bother him, and just looks a bit unsightly. What do you think MN?

No idea - bit it looks infected. If puss comes out, there obviously is some sort of infection and needs treating. How about asking a pharmacist for advice - there may be some sort of cream they could give you, otherwise some ABs from the Gp may be necessary.

It looks like a paronychia. Often once the pus comes out they go away, but if it keeps reforming it may need some help to settle it. I think it is quite a reasonable thing to see the GP about.

You could go to your local pharmacy and ask their advice.

It looks like a small infection. My son had one.

All I did was devolve some salt in boiled water. Let it cool enough so he can put in finger in it but aim for not cold as it needs the heat to draw it out. I then used some antiseptic cream and put a plaster on it. Took it off the next day and it was virtually gone.

Alternatively if it has a crust/hard top (I can't see on the pic) it could be a wart.

Ok consensus seems to be to get it looked at, I'll make an appointment. I was kind of hoping someone would say 'ohhhhh I know exactly what that is, it's X'. I'll see a GP in two weeks when they have an appointment and report back.

Well yes, its a paronychia. But you still should go to the GP if it still there after three months.

I did Google that and they all seem much closer to the nail bed than this. I know I'm not going to get a definite answer until I see a GP though.

It could be a foreign body (splinter) that is causing chronic infection.

MIL had something very similar went on for about 12mnths, she saw GP about it who gave her antibiotic cream which did no good. Eventually trien magnesium sulphate cream which 'draws' the infection. After 24hrs she saw the end of a splinter which she pulled out. It was about 10mms long and about 3mms wide we couldn't believe it had been stuck in her thumb that long. She had shown it to me on several occasions and you couldn't see the splinter just a small round sore that wouldn't heal.

Get it checked by GP.

It doesn't look like molluscum, I googled it and it's not at all like the pictures and it's just one spot, not lots.

Splinter is an interesting one, it could be. That one you've described willdo sounds icky!

Haven't got through to the doctors yet, so no closer to seeing one!

Looks like molloscum to me. I'm VERY familiar with those little pita things.

It wasn't really, it was in the pad of her thumb just above the first joint and was only painful when she use scissors. It did have a small round callous like lesion that occasionally became inflamed and she could squeeze pus out of.

Technically the body forms a fibrous bag around a retained splinter to stop infection. It forms a tube to the surface through which any build up of infection drains rather than getting into the blood stream. A simple X-ray will show a foreign body.

May be a piece of loose nail that has become embedded.

So if anyone is still around and interested, it's a wart. Slightly inflamed hence the puss. So a cream to help with that but the wart should go by the time he is 3! As log as it doesn't cause him any problems then no treatment necessary.

My ds1(9) has just got rid of a wart after a couple of years. We were given scalactic?? Gel which stung like hell. It forms a cover over the top and was pretty useless. Another GP said not to use it and they go on their own which it did. Actually didn't seem like two years that he had it either! Xx
