6mo son having pains.

My 6mo son has gone off his milk and has started to get, what I can only assume are pains - where he clenches his fists, brings his knees up and throws his head forward and he screams. Each time he does this it only lasts a second, but then an episode can last up to 10min. The doctor says it's nothing to worry about. But I'm asking on here if anyone else's child had experienced this?? I'm a first time mum and a worrier. Thanks

It sounds like colic but I didn't know you could get it at 6m.

Could it be a reaction to pain elsewhere? Teething? Ear infection?

Is he eating solid food? And if so could something in his diet be causing him to have stomach pain? Dairy can often be a culprit for that. Maybe keep a bit of a food diary.

Poor little thing. It gets so much easier when they can say what's hurting.

He has started on solids, no dairy, just fruits and veg. Maybe it's his body getting used to food?? It did cross my mind maybe it's pain else where.....it does look like a tooth is coming through. . It's just horrible seeing him in a lot of pain

It really could be anything couldn't it? Its such a guessing game!

Maybe it is just his digestive system getting used to processing solids. Are his poos okay? They'll give you a clue as to whether it's constipation causing the discomfort.

You could just try him with a bit of paracetamol if he seems very upset. See if it takes the edge off.

I know, I just wish he could say what's wrong His poops have always been a bit on the hard side, they've not changed any.
I'm going to take him to baby clinic tomorrow, as it's ran by a health visitor, hopefully she'll be a bit more helpful than the docs!!

I've spent a little while agonising over whether to reply to this as I don't want to worry you, but this sounds potentially concerning. Could you video the episode to show the HV/GP? It brought to mind something called Salaam attacks, though it of course could be reflux etc, I couldn't help think of that from your description.

Gosh Brie, I've never heard of that before. I've just googled it.

I've had him to the doctors and explained to her his symptoms, but she said its nothing to worry about.....I've recorded him now, so when I go to baby clinic I can show the health visitor. I'm going to goggle what you've just said then as I've never heard of it. Thank you all for your opinions - it means a lot

I agree that recording it was a good idea. It's much better if medical professionals can actually see what we're seeing rather than just listening to description. Less easy to ignore visual evidence.

Hi, from experience this sounds like either silent reflux or Sandifer's Syndrome, which is a type of spasm in response to the pain that occurs with reflux. It can look like a seizure, but it is not so try not to worry. I would keep filming his episodes, keep a diary and ask to see a paediatrician if baby clinic isn't helpful. Good luck!

I've Google both of these now, and I'm now so worried. It looks alot like West Syndrome and now I'm all worked up. So scared now that my poor baby is ill . Defo showing video footage and putting my foot down that it's just 'nothing' I hope I can get some sort of answer tomorrow. Thank you all for your help and advice. I feel like i was minimising it now but i'd never heard of those syndromes. It's pointless telling you not to worry because of course you will. At least you've got it recorded and you're armed with information.

I really hope anything serious will be ruled out.

Just a little update - had little one at doctors this morning, showed him video footage of the spasms and doc said it looks like a fit....referred to epilepsy specialist. Was going to take weeks to see someone so decided to go private. Seeing someone on Thursday. Fingers crossed we find a cause to these episodes.

How scary for you Deb. I hope you get to the bottom of it and whatever the outcome find something to help your DS.

Well we've found the cause of the attacks - it is West Syndrome. If it hadn't been for your advice, we'd probably still not know what was happening. Baby has been admitted to hospital and is now on a drug to try get the seizures under control. So glad we got it sorted sooner rather than later to avoid too much brain damage. x

I don't know anything about the condition apart from what I've seen on Google but i hope that getting an early diagnosis is a 'good' (for want of a better word) thing. It must be very worrying for you.
