Urine reflux treatment for 6 month baby

Hi there

My son was in hospital for a week with a UTI at 5 weeks old. He's been on antibiotics for the past 6 months and following a recent kidney scan I was told one kidney has scarring/damage due to his wee going back into his kidney.

He now has to have a mag3 scan and a catheter scan next month. I know it won't be pleasant l and that he needs to have it done (I'm sh@*tting myself).

The specialist has told us he more than likely will have to have his bladder operated on before he is 1 to correct the reflux.

Has anyone else been through this with their DC? And how is their health now? I'm aware i'm looking at giving him antibiotics for the first few years of his life and again anxious about the effects of taking them for so long

Yes. Try not to worry. My daughter has one-sided duplex kidney and had reflux. She has had regular DMSA and mag 3 scans, plus a MCUG (catheter), was on low dose antibiotics for 5 years, and had a procedure aged 5 to correct the reflux which has worked. She's fine. Just go with the plan, and get his wee tested regularly so that any UTIs are treated promptly and aggressively

Thanks for the reassurance, I'm glad to hear your daughter is fine. It's horrible seeing them go through this so young isn't it.
It's the catheter test I'm dreading although I guess the good thing about him having the test at 7 months is that he won't remember it

Yes it's all horrible, I found it all really hard to deal with at first. With the MCUG, the only bad bit is them putting the catheter in- if you're really worried get your partner to be there and leave the room till that bit is done. Then you can come back in and watch the X-ray, which is really interesting! My daughter was 6 months when she had the MCUG. It'll be fine- all over in the blink of an eye!

Thank you, yes I think I might just do that and let me husband stay while they fit the catheter. I just hope it's not too terrible an experience for my son.

Your son won't know anything other than a bit of discomfort- no worse than a tummy ache- try not to worry.
