Hand Foot and Mouth

I noticed quite a few red spots on the soles of my 2 year old DS's feet, up his legs on his knees and a few on the palm of his hands this morning.

He hasn't had any more develop today but I'm thinking it's likely to be HF&M.

Do I need to see my GP for this or is it just something that will run it's course.

He seems really well in himself, happy and giggly today. Also he doesn't seem to have any ulcers in his mouth - do these develop later??

No need to see GP. When I had it the mouth ulcers were last. I think Ds was the same. Calpol if he needs it, lots of fluids and that's it really.

GothicRainbow · 23/05/2015 20:50

Ok that's good to know, so the mouth ulcers might well be on the way then - will keep an eye out.

He had a dose of calpol tonight even though he seemed quite happy as a just in case measure.

Well it's day 2 of the rash and we have blisters on the hands but the feet rash has stayed pretty much the same.

Still not sure about the mouth ulcers as he's continuing to eat well. He seemed abit more under the weather today but not horrendously so.

More calpol tonight just in case!

They don't always get mouth ulcers- one of mine had it really badly on hands feet and groin, but not in his mouth. The other one had mouth ulcers, hand spots but not on feet.

GothicRainbow · 26/05/2015 11:02

Thanks that's good to know about the ulcers - still haven't been able to look in his mouth!

This is a nasty old bug, DS has been running a mild temp on and off for the past couple of days and he woke up early this morning quite upset. Calpol does seem to be keeping it under control at the moment though.

The blisters on his feet and knees are improving but he's still got a couple of nasty ones on his hands that are taking longer to heal.

Does anyone know roughly how long the blisters will take to go?

You don't need to give Calpol "just in case". Obviously is he's in pain or distressed, absolutely do. I know you said in later posts he seemed a bit under the weather, but your first ones said 'he's happy/he's really well but I'm giving it anyway'.

HFM doesn't have to appear on the hands, feet and mouth, it's only called this because this is where it's most likely to be seen. Neither of mine had it in their mouths. DS had it on his feet, knees and bottom. DD had it on her hands and feet.

He will remain contagious for around a week after developing spots and the blisters can linger for around 10 days.

Hope he's better soon.

Hi Gothic I think my ds also has it. Can they get it twice? Little red bumps on bum but outside nappy area, top of legs, now appearing on instep of feet, palms & arms, side of mouth. Snotty, cough, feels warm but no temp, bit whiny. Bloody early waking 5am today FFS,been going on for a few days now. Poor things must feel rubbish.

AggressiveBunting · 26/05/2015 13:23

Yeah, unfortunately there are a number of viruses that cause HFM so you can get it twice (or even more although unusual). Subsequent cases are usually less severe, but your poor DS might have got unlucky.

cakebaby · 26/05/2015 13:48

Thank you bunting i think he had a very mild case a few months ago with just a few facial spots & bumps on his soles but this time it seems much more prevelant

GothicRainbow · 26/05/2015 19:22

We've had a rough day today, he's been massively tired, grouchy and has had a temp all day.

I understand some people don't agree with giving calpol but my DS doesn't communicate well so he isn't currently able to tell me if his mouth/throat hurts and I wanted to make sure he was comfortable for bed.

The rash is actually starting to clear at the moment which is weird as this has been his poorliest day. I'm hoping things will improve tomorrow as he must feel wretched and I hate seeing him so down.

Really hope your DS is feeling better soon cake.

Oh gothic it's horrible isn't it? Ds in total meltdown today. Spots worse, eating cereal & yoghurt ok but can't seem to bf for some reason. Won't let me look in his mouth either
