What can kids eat after tonsilectomy?

My dd (5) is having her adenoids and tonsils out on Thursday. I've had no info from the hospital on what she can eat afterwards and I don't know what to buy. Some sites say only soft food and others say crunchy to promote healing. I'm really confused!! And terrified, but that's another story Hmm

It's a long 2 weeks, but it will be sooooo worth it.
My Ds had sleep apnoea too but his issue was awful repeated tonsilitis - he had it every 4-6 weeks. He lost a lot of weight.
But hasn't had it since.
Had other things! But not tonsillitis.

...and Ds found fruit juice painful, and ice cream and dairy hurt too for some reason.
He just ate Normally really, except no Apple juice or ice cream.
Pain meds every 3 hours....I drew a chart Blush

Hi my dd had this operation when she 4yo for similar reasons (chronic glue ear and sleep apnea) she also had some grommets fitted at the same time.

I had stocked up on softer crisps like quavers and skips also marshmallows, the consultant said to me it really didn't matter what they ate as long as they ate something! I was also advised to take a favourite drinks bottle in with us to encourage her to drink afterwards.

Post op wasn't very nice as dd was obviously in pain and did have quite a lot of blood in her mouth however she was given some morphine which helped and she did perk up a bit by the same evening. However in total i would say it took a good couple of weeks for her to fully recover. She found the experience quite overwhelming and was very quiet and not herself for a little while.

I would advise on having a quiet week or two post op (was told to keep her off school for at least two weeks anyway due to risk of infection) with lots of time for cuddles and watching tv. Also stock right up on call and ibrufen, dd needed this 2 hourly for quite a few days.

Hope I haven't scared you even more op Grin but I wish I had been a bit better prepared tbh! It was worth it as breathing and ears were much better post op.

Oh and another thing I hadn't been prepared for was that for a while after the op when dd had a drink a small amount would dribble out of her nose!! No idea how common this is but it did freak me out a little bit first time it happened.

I had also bought dd a gift (talking Annabel doll) for being brave which went down well and was a good distraction.

I bought loom bands and colouring books, and dvds for when he got home.
We had to stay in for 2 weeks which is hard (esp when it's the hottest 2 weeks of the year!!)

This is all very helpful as 4yo DD2 is due to have her T&A out within the next couple of months due to sleep apnoea caused by constantly massive tonsils. We're also 30 minutes along rural roads to the nearest A&E and the risk is post-operative bleeding is my biggest concern - as is the trip home the following day as the op is being done in a larger hospital which is at least an hour from home on a good day. She's a cheese and pasta fiend so knowing those may cause a problem is a bit of a worry as they are her go-to foods when all else fails. Good tip about Ribena too - I'll stock up on something less blood-like in colour.

Hope all goes well highlystrung.
