3yo dd burnt hand on hob

Brindler · 20/04/2015 19:40

Picked my dd up from grandparents after work today and found her hysterical after putting her hand flat down on a hot hob.

My mum has covered it in a film type dressing and she's been holding a frozen bag of peas on it all the way home and won't let it go now!

I can see blisters on her thumb and forefinger. She's still very upset 2 hours later.

Any advice on how best to treat it? The blisters are in such awkward places on her little fingers ð???

Yes, she needs to go to a&e, no doubt about it.

Another saying her to A&E or minor injuries.
I (ex chef) have burnt myself often, usually on my arms and they can easily go bad if the blister breaks (worst is forgetting after a shower and rubbing the top with a towel Sad). As others have said the 50p rule doesn't count for children - it is percentage of an area that counts - so on small children less than 50p.

I did the palm of my hand (stupidly on a big flat sieve on a grill - thought it looked hot so put my hand on it Blush - I had a net patterned blister over the entire palm of my hand) because of the size - the blisters ran into each other and risk of infection A&E put it in a plastic bag with cream for 24hrs (? iirc - if not that longer) and I had to go back to get checked before it came off.
And it hurt like hell - even after treatment - the cream didn't take the pain away (I only went cos they had some fantastic stuff for a big scald I did once -instant pain relief -bliss). I kept the bagged hand in iced water and took strong painkillers.
As others said -running water for 10-15 mins is best for burns before blistering and then cold water for the pain . Don't ever use ice/frozen stuff directly on a burn - especially a blister - danger of it freezing to it and taking the top off.
Good Luck -your poor DD

Absolutely A&EHmm

Tealady1983 · 20/04/2015 20:18

Poor girl I burnt my foot once with steam/water combo and it was excruciating I agree with above a and e

maxybrown · 20/04/2015 20:19

I burnt my hand one summer when camping, missed the cup when puring water from the kettle. :/

The pain was immense, so poor little thing must be in awful pain. I had to keep refreshing the water it was in couldn't bear for it to not be in cold water. Hope she's ok OP and you've been to A and E

maxybrown · 20/04/2015 20:22

pouring even

MilkThistle187 · 20/04/2015 20:30

Oh your poor dd, I did the same thing myself years ago and it was so sore. Do take her to A&E as everyone has said and they can minimise the discomfort for her. I would be having serious words with your parents too, they should have called you straight away.

Hi ladies just skimming the replies - thanks for all the advice. We are just back from a&e. So glad we went as the blistering was more extensive than I thought. After a 4 hour wait her hand is now properly dressed and we have a follow up appt at the burns clinic on Wednesday.

Again, thanks for all taking the time to reply x

Hope she is a bit more comfortable now OP and able to get some sleep tonight. Very long night for you all Flowers

Muddymits · 21/04/2015 02:17

Hope it heals well and quickly, poor little thing ( and you) having a 4 hour wait:(

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 21/04/2015 03:29

Glad your dd has been seen.

I don't often say this but your parents were very wrong not to act sooner to get your dd looked at. I understand accidents happen but if it were my parents I'd be very cross they didn't seek medical attention as soon as possible.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 21/04/2015 10:33

Oh, your poor DD (hope you're OK too, you must be so angry) Sad Did she sleep OK?

Brindler · 21/04/2015 12:35

Thanks everyone. She slept like a log til 9am and actually seems fine today. I've been up since 6 though as my work alarm was on (obviously haven't gone into work today) and am absolutely shattered!

Yes I am very mad at my parents. They said they didn't call me as I would have been on the train home at the time it happened. I think they panicked and tried to play it down (which makes me even more mad) but that's why I didn't go straight to a&e as I didn't realise the severity of it at the time having not been there when it happened. It's actually the first time we've ever had to take dd to a&e!

Time to renew my first aid training I think and look into proper childminders!

How's your dd doing now? terrible that you had to wait 4 hours.I'm glad she was seen.

Brindler · 22/04/2015 19:47

She's doing really well thanks jingle. Actually surprised by how little it's bothering her! Saw the consultant today who said it will heal fine by itself. Although she now has an even bigger bandage! Got to take her for a dressing change on Friday and then another check up on Monday morning. Hoping the bandages will decrease in size with each visit!

Ah glad she is doing well. What a brave little girl you have. As a student, I once burnt my thumb by trying to scrap something off a empty pan on a lit hob. It was very painful! Hope her hospital visits continue to go well. How are things with your parents? I think there are often differences in the way older generation react to injuries and illnesses! Remember my mil treating my dh 's tonsillitis with polo mints lol when we were students!

Brindler · 23/04/2015 11:14

Yes definitely agree with the generation thing. It's the whole 'back in our day...' situation isn't it. I'm going round there this afternoon to have a 'chat' with them about it. I mean I understand accidents happen but she shouldn't have been anywhere near that oven while my mum was cooking - I certainly don't let dd near it when I am! I'm sure they've learnt they're lesson though and mum feels terrible about it

Just checked back in to see what had happened and am glad she is doing ok Brindler :)

I bet your parents feel absolutely dreadful that she is injured and that she needed hospital attention. Hope the chat went ok too.
