Teething or something else?

My dd's nursery called me on Thursday and Friday afternoon this week to tell me that she'd been really unsettled both days. On Thursday they said she'd seemed really sad all day and wasn't herself. Took her temp and it was fine but one of her ears was very waxy on the outside and it was bright red. So I picked her up early and took her to GP. GP examined her and said ear was pink inside so could be start of an ear infection and gave me a deferred prescription and told me to use it if temp rose consistently.

Dd had nurofen on Thursday night at bedtime and slept well and no temp on Fri am so went to nursery. Got a call at lunchtime to say she hadn't eaten much ( very unusual as she loves her food) and wasn't herself. Wouldn't play on her own and was very clingy. They gave her calpol and tried to put her down. She only managed 30 mins and then my mum picked her up. One of nursery workers said they'd seen white spots in her mouth so we ended up back at GP. Different GP checked her out and said ear was bit pink. Took temp which was fine and listened to her chest and said it was ok.

Got home after doctors and dribble was streaming from her mouth. I have never seen her so bad and she was really unhappy. Gave her nurofen again last night and she was quite unsettled but eventually slept. She's woken up this morning and is really cranky and clearly in pain so have just given her some calpol. Chomping on everything including the calpol bottle and dribble is pouring from her.

We had front 8 teeth by 9mo so know it's molars next but I can't see or feel anything under her gums.

Does all of the above sound like molars?

Just worried it's something else but don't want to give her antibiotics as she hasn't got a temp. She has had an on and off cold for 2 weeks now and has an awful rattle cough with it.

Any tips on how to help her? She's so upset that we have no idea what to do!

You don't mention how old your dd is, but we've just had a horrific 'molar month' with 2.4yo dd, it was like someone replaced my child with the Devils unwell child... Not great.
Teeth can cause pain just by moving around in the gums to get into position to come out- which is probably why you can't feel anything..
Hope she gets better soon!

could the white spots be blisters? if so may be hand foot and mouth which would explain poor eating, drooling and crankiness. my son had similar symptoms when he had it. you dont always get a rash on hands and feet. hope your lo feels better soon

Thanks all.

She's 12mo. I did wonder about hfm but can't seem to see blisters anywhere else. The white spots are mainly on the front of her tongue almost like raised white taste buds.

I did put some anbesol on her gums last night and felt huge bumps on the side of her gums. They were massive and she really upset when I touched them so guessing it must be her molars.

She also went through 4 dribble bibs yesterday due to the sheer volume of dribble!!
