Urgent advice vomiting after bang on head

WorriedAboutDD2 · 17/04/2015 21:21

Dd is 10 she slept at grandparents last night and banged Her head ( picture fell off wall and toppled onto her when in bed, but we don't think it was a direct hit, IYSWIM. She has been off her food all day and had a head ache. She has been groaning for 2 hours saying she feels dreadful and has now vomited badly. She says she feels quite a bit better. My question is, does vomiting related to a bang on head follow this pattern ( ie v much like a bug, with a worsening tummy ache that goes after vomiting?). Her pupils are fine and colour returned to cheeks after vomit. She's not at all drowsy/ confused. Headache is moderate despite calpol.

Btw Her GM monitored her during the night and she ate breakfast as normal, but felt Ill by lunchtime. At home time she reported the headache to me.
No adult was present when her head was hit and dd be melodramatic so v hard to tell how hard the bang was. I only found out about the incident after school so am trying to evaluate how serious it was/ what to do now. Tbh, I was quite slow to link the tummy ache to the head bump, although I was aware of a slight headache.

Any advice? Should I take her to be checked out or just let her sleep?

When i worked in childrens A&E they were allowed one vomit after a head injury. Any more than one and then they would be admitted and possibly have a scan or xray.
Call OOH for advice if its just the once then they can direct you to A&E if needed.

Take her, explain the history and let them decide.
You cannot be too careful with head injuries.
Delayed concussion can be very serious.

senrensareta · 17/04/2015 21:54

I would not go directly to A&E if there is any possibility of her having a bug but would ring 111 or OOH for advice and only go if they tell you to

Thanks everyone. Dh has taken her to a and e ( dd1 is in bed). We rang and spoke to paed duty nurse who said is sounded more like a bug/ Coincidence but as she had 2 symptoms from the check list, then protocol was to bring her in.

Serens, I'm very aware of that angle, as I've had a very sick relative in hospital recently. Thanks.

I wish I could've taken Her with dh. He wouldn't let me drive her as I've had recent eye surgery and struggle with night driving, but I wish we could all be together. Feels rubbish not being with her :-(

I'm sure all will be well but the waiting is pants. Hope you manage to get some sleep.

How is she?

WorriedAboutDD2 · 18/04/2015 20:23

she is fine now, thanks nanny. she was at a and e with dh until 2am. she was sick twice more whilst waiting and after a total of 3 hours without being given the painkillers and rehydration salts that they'd promised, dh gave up and brought her home with clear instructions about what to look out for, as it was clear she'd get the medication more quickly at home. the poor thing had to spend her evening with the friday night drunks, with a violent film playing in the waiting room !! she was was then moved to a side room that was not very clean and in the end, dh just made the the decision to bring her back.

it was the vomiting in then absence of diarrhoea that has caused them to treat it as possible concussion, btw. she is fragile today but keeping fluid sand plain food down. think the bump on the head was not related to the sickness.

dh was glad that he'd taken her, despite the unpleasantness.

How awful.

Why on earth was a violent film playing? How sad that they didn't have somewhere appropriate to put a small child (our A&E has a children's room - just a few chairs and some toddler toys, but you aren't allowed in unless accompanying a child, so it's away from any drunkenness, etc). And how awful to wait so long.

But I'm glad to hear that she's feeling better.

WorriedAboutDD2 · 18/04/2015 20:58

thanks penguin. we used to have a children's area at brighton, but are now closer to worthing. it was grim, according to dh. i cannot believe they failed to give her a drink/ rehydration salts in over 2 hours!

Sad
senrensareta · 19/04/2015 16:53

That is shocking, both the lack of treatment and the violent film, but glad she is ok and now improving
