Would you assume maybe slapped cheek, or so a doctor?

DD(3) has flushed red cheeks today. More over her cheekbone. Looks a bit like a teething rash, only she has no teeth left to come through.

She's been absolutely fine and full of beans today, eating and napping as normal, CM thought she seemed completely normal. She hasn't had a fever or been ill over the past week, though if I'm remembering my dates right I think about a week ago she was mildly under the weather - a bit hot one night, woke up fine. Maybe been a teeny bit tireder this past week than usual. Nothing to write home about.

So a bit of googling suggests slapped cheek. Though I suppose I'm a bit wary of assuming that as she hasn't really been ill at all (though I don't know what I'm expecting as touch wood to date she's never been overly poorly with anything). Could it be anything else? Would an allergic reaction present as just flushed cheeks?

We can get appts in the morning at our GP normally, but I really don't want to waste a GP's time to be told its a mild case of slapped cheek. Just unsure if there's anything else I should be considering?

Or "see" a doctor even Hmm

I wouldn't see a Dr if a child has red cheeks but is otherwise well, no.

If you can manage it at home, manage it at home. Which you can do.

I wouldn't. We saw a dr when DD had suspected slapped cheek but only because I was pregnant and we had no idea if I was immune so needed a blood test. To be honest the dr barely even looked at DD (15 months at the time), just said 'it could be slapped cheek, might not be but we'll check your blood for immunity anyway'.

DS has had red cheeks recently too. No more teeth here either. He's had it for the last few days & I've realised he's probably just been a bit hot as the weathers nice.

Emmie10 · 15/04/2015 19:31

Exactly the same here. LO woke up one night with a temp, perfectly fine in the morning and then 7 days later rash on cheeks. I am assuming slapped cheek although she is full of beans and in no way unwell. I'm not taking her to the doctor unless of course other symptoms arise that concern me.

Thurlow · 15/04/2015 19:33

I've just read that back and it looks a bit like I'm suggesting rushing to the doctors at the slightest illness Blush

To put it far more sensibly without waffling - is there anything about red cheeks that could mean something like an allergy that is worth seeing a doctor about?

I just don't want to just assume its a nice and mild case of slapped cheek when it could be something else.

(I did try googling but you can't get any other results for red cheeks than slapped cheek or, if you do, it's the usual 'call 999, it's something chronically fatal' type)

And sorry, thanks for the replies! I guess the heat could have brought it out a bit. But Emmie that sounds exactly the same, reassuring to hear someone else making the same assumption Grin

Unless it lasts longer than you would expect slapped cheek to last, or there are other symptoms, I would just manage it at home.

Fizzyplonk · 15/04/2015 19:45

Only other thing I might think of is Scarlett fever. Don't know much about it but a few cases in the area recently

Thurlow · 15/04/2015 19:58

Scarlett fever doesn't seem to fit as she doesn't have any other symptoms but thank you, I will keep an eye out.

She's at the CM's this week - I'm assuming the CM isn't worried as she didn't call today and just mentioned it when I picked her up. Have had a quick check and there is no exclusion period, though of course I'll check, especially in case she knows she has seen anyone who is pregnant recently.

No I wouldn't see a doctor though weirdly I've had very similar myself this week.

Fwiw when Ds had slapped cheek he was fine for the first 2 days of the rash then unwell for a day.

Thurlow · 16/04/2015 09:35

Ah - was he very unwell with the rash? I read that might come out in another day or two and luckily she's off the CMs anyway all weekend and early in the week.
