How the actual fuck do I get flucoxicillin into my 19mo??

He has infected chicken pox. Supposed to have 4x 5ml per day, on an empty stomach. If I get one dose into him it will be a miracle, never mind 4 at specified time periods....

He will not have it. Just got myself in a right state with him screaming, retching, etc.

Wtaf do I do?

Put med in syringe. Sit child sideways on your lap, one arm tucked under your arm, other arm held by you. Use your other hand to squirt meds into child's mouth, into side and back, bit by bit.

timetosmile · 03/04/2015 19:04

Never mind the empty stomach bit (I am a health professional)..just get it in!
Mixed in a pot of chocolate petit filous/favourite ice cream always worked with mine..soooo frustrating isn't it?!
Don't try bribes or reasoning or pleading, just go for good old fashioned deceit.
Hope DS feels better soon.

emkana · 03/04/2015 19:04

Follow up with choc button if you like.

Unescorted · 03/04/2015 19:08

We found it was a 2 person job... one to hold dd's head still and mouth open. The other to squirt it in under the tongue with a syringe. There was much screaming and retching.

I wish you luck - a small child with pox is not nice. Hope he feels better soon

FreeButtonBee · 03/04/2015 19:09

Wrap child in a towel. Have someone hold their head. Use calpol syringe. Follow up with forbidden food with high value. You have my sympathy. Tis a harrowing experience

Unescorted · 03/04/2015 19:12

I just remembered - it was only the banana one she disliked. Once it was changed to an unflavoured version she was better.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 03/04/2015 19:12

Ds2 (18 months) had a nasty impetigo infection last week. I felt like he hardly took any medicine, despite my best efforts, but it cleared up, so he obviously got enough. I found distraction was the best tactic. His sister dancing or Piggle videos on YouTube were the most successful.

balletgirlmum · 03/04/2015 19:15

Ds was almost hospitalised with cellulitus because he wouldnt take it.

We tried in yoghurt & got some in but the only thing that sort of masked the taste was very strong, almost neat Ribena .

Sleepyfergus · 03/04/2015 19:16

Put it in a syringe and dip the end of the syringe in Calpol (assuming he likes Calpol!) and once it's in the mouth, whoosh it in. You might not get it all in, but some will at least have gone in. I have been known to load up 5 syringes with 1ml of antibiotic, all dipped with Calpol in order to gets decent amount in.

Best of luck!!

ThreeFrazzledFandangos · 03/04/2015 19:16

Lay child on towel (to collect spat/spilled medicine), kneel on top of child but with no weight on them with knees either side of head (sounds cruel but needs must), hold cheeks to open mouth and syringe into side of cheek slowly.

Honestly it's harrowing to get the medicine in them but DS had tonsillitis at 11 months and again at 17 months, needs must when they're that ill.

OrinocoTheWomble · 03/04/2015 19:16

Tilt head back, squirt it in (not straight for the back of the throat but slightly to the side), tickle under the chin and hold mouth closed if needed. He will swallow! (It's the same way I give worming tablets to my cat). Always worked for DS and he now loves most forms of medicine! Never eat anything nice before medicine it just makes it taste so much worse. Big glug of water after.
I always did it in one squirt, 5ml is not too much. Perhaps you could promise a little treat at the end of the medicine? DS had this medicine for CP and it's great as it stopped all itching. Hope better soon.

momtothree · 03/04/2015 19:18

Put it on a spoon - press the spoon lightly on tongue for a few seconds and they have to swallow - try it on yourself

fruitpastille · 03/04/2015 19:19

Sometimes you can get something more palatable prescribed if you ask. Worth a try?

HootyMcTooty · 03/04/2015 19:20

Ask for the sugary one, my kids lap it up. Drs default to the sugar free one, it's horrible and I stood not a hope in hell of getting it down DD, I always ask for the sugary variety now. They pull a face, but I'd rather get the medicine into my child, it's not like it's a long term course.

passthewineplz · 03/04/2015 19:20

My DD had some a couple of weeks ago and kept spitting it out. I told the doctor and he said it was fine to take with food, so you can put it a yogurt or milk or something

TurnItIn · 03/04/2015 19:23

YY to bribery and corruption. So follow emkana's fab advice, then pop a chocolate button in the gob straight after with lots and lots of praise. In a couple of days you might not need the strong arm approach as the lure of a chocolate button be strong.

ChocolateIsMySleep · 03/04/2015 19:34

Flucoxicilin is truly disgusting. My DD had to have it at 5 months for cellulitis and it was a major battle every time. The pharmacist when asked said he didn't recommend mixing with anything like milk or yoghurt so I'd check first. At 19 months I'd opt for chocolate bribery - keep the chocolate in sight at all times! Dipping syringe in something a bit nicer is also a good plan, honey might work?

passthewineplz · 03/04/2015 19:42

I asked the doctor 2 weeks ago if it was ok to put in yogurt and other food he said it was fine. But always check with your own GP or pharmacist if in doubt

DoingTheSwanThing · 03/04/2015 20:13

Lie small person on floor and sit behind, head between your legs, legs over arms. Keep finger between back teeth, squirt slowly and wait for a swallow.

Sounds brutal... It's an awful feeling at first, but needs must and I promise you won't end up with traumatised DS Flowers

TynesideBlonde · 03/04/2015 20:15

Ice cream!

Shetland · 03/04/2015 20:20

I had this problem a few weeks ago - and for the same reason!
I phoned the GP to ask for something else and she said try and hide it in food as it really was the best antibiotic for the job. But it tastes so revolting that it's hard to hide it in anything - it flavours whatever you put it in.
In the end we got some into her with very strong juice and much manhandling but I don't think she got anything worth having. Although it did clear up so maybe she got more than I thought.

Good luck.

susannahmoodie · 03/04/2015 20:38

Have already tried petit Filofax it still tastes rank (I tried).

Will give neat Ribena and chocolate bribery a go.

Thank god for the collective wisdom of Mumsnet.
