Horrendous trapped wind at night (bottom end)

Hi!
Can someone give advice on this? My 6 week old son get Zantac for reflux and infacol for wind which are both working. He can burp quite easily but always from about 4am he seems to struggle with passing wind. I've been doing baby massage on his tummy which helps at night before bedtime but can't really do that straight after his 3am feed cause of his reflux.
Does anyone else have this problem or any to say what can help him... well fart? Lol

Hey, my DS also had reflux and terrible trapped wind early morning. He would be thrashing around like a salmon on dry land! I always felt so sorry for him. What did help was massage the tummy gently first, then with nappy off cycle with his legs and press his knees into his tummy and give alternate pressure left and right (not to hard of course). After a while he cottoned on and would be straining along! I did learn the hard way not to stand right in front of the business end because along with wind sometimes he did a projectile poo. Good luck Grin

Do the cycling thing that Miss suggests - put him on the bed in front of you, gently push both knees back onto his tummy, then do the right leg, left leg, both together. Repeat as necessary - and make sure you haven't got your best clothes on, the results can be spectacular!

I forgot to say that you can also move his right leg and left hand to touch each other diagonally over the body (if that makes sense) and then alternate with the left leg to the right hand. Basically the whole routine would like a weird kind of gymnastics but it really worked.

Thanks! I've now been up since 3.30 since he didn't properly settle after his feed. Off to dig out the overalls now haha

3.30?? Shock

Oh my goodness, I hope you have a better night tonight. It does get better, honestly Smile

MissBrighton · 06/04/2015 18:36

It really does get better! Poor both of you in the mean time though :( Good luck xx

Well I followed your advice and all I can say is... That poo was EPIC!! Haha. Fingers crossed he sleeps better tonight and so do I cause looking after a baby and 3 year old isn't ideal on no sleep lol
Thank you so much for the advice ladies! X

Haha! Amazing how a projectile poo can make you feel like a total winner :) Sweet dreams x

Question - why does it need to be nappy off? I could have written your post OP my DS is just the same and I've also had many a night where 3:00 was my morning wake up call.

I have tried all the leg movements suggested for his wind but never had spectacular results, is that because I've kept his nappy on?

SirChenjin · 07/04/2015 21:18

I've done nappy on and off (circumstances at the time) - both work just as well Smile

enigmaVariations · 07/04/2015 22:16

Darn, was hoping there was some sort of magical quality to taking off the nappy Grin

SirChenjin · 07/04/2015 22:21

No, sadly not! Have you tried pushing back gently so that his bottom is in the air, iykwim? Or rubbing his tummy in a circular motion before doing the cycling thing? Infacol plus cycling thing worked with DC3 - he was absolutely full of wind, more so than my other 2 ever were.

MissBrighton · 07/04/2015 22:23

For us nappy off worked best if circumstances allowed. It seemed to make the movements easier and get 'the desired result' quicker and more often.

susang84 · 08/04/2015 04:45

I did it with the nappy off and focus it made the movement easier and his leg could be pushed (gently) that little bit further. Fortunately he had a delay so the nappy was back on before the eruption happened lol

For us the 'results' were definitely better with nappy off! Seemed the leg movements were more effective.

susang84 · 08/04/2015 07:51

You should definitely try it again without. The past two nights have been a lot more settled for us. He'll go back to sleep after his feed and sleep quietly for another 2 1/2 hours. He starts to get unsettled again but a wee cuddle and he goes back down. Smile

I'm so pleased for you Susang84! Sleep deprivation is the worst especially if you know they're uncomfortable. Well done :)
