Dd is 2.5 and on long term antibiotics for ongoing/recurring chest infections.
She currently is at the end of her 2nd week of an additional antibiotic for this most recent infection. She is to be reviewed today to see if the infection has cleared.
If not, it's possible a 3rd week of extra oral antibiotics will be given (again on top of her long term ones)!!!
Previously she has needed IV medication to properly clear her infection. At what point would be reasonable to say enough is enough?

i dont think ever! You need to go on the doctor's advice surely?
does she eat well?

Sirzy · 02/04/2015 11:22

Has she had an x-ray and swabs done? Swabs should help to ensure she is getting the right antibiotic.

Coffeemonster1 · 02/04/2015 11:23

Sorry what I meant is, enough of the oral antibiotics and ask for IV instead which in the past has been needed to clear the infection properly and works fairly quickly with her. At the moment were going round in circles with endless oral antibiotics and it doesn't seem to be clearing. Is one more week on current meds going to make much difference.

Has anyone mentioned asthma.

re occurring chest infection can be the start.

yes agree re swabs. have they checked and targeted the antibiotics?

Does she need inhalers

Coffeemonster1 · 02/04/2015 11:24

Yes eats well apart from the days when her temp is high. Is still little though, hasn't got many reserves for when she is poorly. She has had so many X-rays and they have always got infection both sides.

Have they given steroids at all

Sirzy · 02/04/2015 11:25

Is she under a specialist? If so I would be phoning them for advice.

Coffeemonster1 · 02/04/2015 11:27

She has been trialled on inhalers and had nebs before which has made no difference. It's more the fact her long term antibiotcs should be preventing these infection. She is still getting them. 4 in 4 months. And now this current one hasn't cleared with 2 weeks of additional antibiotcs. Which can be a good sign or any good for her?

She is under the JR do you think it's worth phoning them then. Our local hospital is kind of like a base where she is reviewed every few months but because she is under JR they tend to hold back on decision making.

I would assume then that it's possibly not an infection.

has she been tested for allergies?

what inhalers were you trialed on? how long for. are you certain they told you how to administer correctly?
have they given steroids?

Sirzy · 02/04/2015 11:31

Yes I would phone and I would be pushing for more investigations tbh

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/04/2015 11:33

Yes phone. with some people inhalers aren't enough. allergies to dust mites etc need to be dealt with

there's more going on than a chest infection by the sound of it. my guess would be allergies and asthma. but you would need a work up

Coffeemonster1 · 02/04/2015 11:34

They seem to think it is an infection. They put her under GA and had a look in her lungs and took a sample. Infection and inflammation but no answers. No she hasn't been tested for allergies how would you go about getting it done? Not sure what they were called but they kept her in for 2 weeks IV and trialled them then so were administered by the nurses. Never steroids though I don't think. She has had so many admissions it's hard to remember what was done what time.

Most preventer type medication needs 6 weeks to build up properly.

Allergy testing is initially done via blood tests. Very simple to do.

DS still gets a lot of infections but as he asthma is better controlled he the ones he gets are generally not as bad.

Hope you get answers soon.
