Possible Scarlet Fever

Looking for some advice please! Sorry it's long...

Have taken my 5 yr old DD to the gp today. She has had sore throat, headache and mild fever since Friday lunch time.

Just after tea time yesterday she developed a rash over her chest. Also had a white tongue with pits and bobbles on. Several of her class mates have had strep A throat infections and also gone on to delevop Scarlet Fever. Last diagnosis of this was Thursday.

I saw the gp I trust the most (just luck as was a triage appointment ). He took a look at her throat and saw the white spots on her tonsils, and diagnosed tonsillitis.

I asked about bright red tongue (as white top layer had gone ) and rash. He thought the rash was viral but didn't seem to see the tongue as important.

He prescribed her a 5 day dose of antibiotics and said would be same treatment if that or strep A.

However now worrying that it is Scarlet Fever and that 5 days of antibiotics won't be enough.

Anyone else had this dilemma? Can you get strawberry tongue just from Strep A? Should I phone docs again tomorrow and ask them to look again? Am not very pushy normally but all websites advise can be really dangerous if is Scarlet Fever and you don't take a full 10 day course.

Thanks for anyone whose reached end of this essay!

If it helps, perhaps you could just say it's been playing on your mind and you like them to do a swab test just to rule out scarlet fever. That way you don't come across as pushy, or that you're undermining your doctor - just a worried mum trying to put her mind at ease. I hope your little one is feeling better soon. Just out of interest, is she struggling to eat and drink with a sore tongue? xx (I have just posted about my daughter with scarlet fever)

Did you mention that her classmates had scarlet fever?

5 days for tonsilitis isn't very long anyways. Dd recently had a 10 day course.1

Thanks for all the advice. Internet connection died on me last night.

Will call surgery today and ask for swabs, then won't feel like I'm being too pushy. The GP involved is the best I've ever encountered but I guess everyone can have an off day!

Tongue is very red and sore, but she is eating soft pretty normally. She also seems more ill today than previously.

I did advise classmates had been confirmed as having scarlet fever. And yes agree 5 days is a short course even if just tonsillitis.
