Lingering cold/fever - would you go to the doctors?

DD(8) had a fever/cold, started two weeks ago today and had four days off school. She went back on the Friday but was clearly wiped and spent all Saturday and Sunday feeling knackered which is not her, fell asleep at 5pm on the Sunday.

A week on and she seems fine (never complains about anything though), still has a cough, which is not terrible and not all night. Hasn't got her usual energy levels back yet (is normally very very active though). Temp hovering at 37.8 generally.

Would you go to the doctors yet or give it a few more days?

I'd give it a few more days with early nights, rest, good food and plenty of TLC. A nasty virus can knock you for up to 6 weeks. Particularly at this time of year, these lingering viruses are rife.

Are you on Easter holidays from next weekend? I'd have as restful a week as possible and review before the holidays assuming nothing changes between now and then.

Thanks Grantaire, yes we do have holidays coming up. We are going away.

It is difficult because she isn't unwell enough not to go to school (and was dying to go back before I let her the week before last), but going to school isn't helping her to feel better.

I suppose it is just the temperature really, if that was normal I wouldn't be worrying about anything else but she looks and feels hot.

She doesn't want to miss anything either, PE or swimming, Brownies etc., and she has two music exams this coming week.

I would rather she did nothing and stayed at home, but I know it isn't possible.

I phoned my GP tonight and they asked us to go in - chest infection, I am so pleased I went as right now her temp is 39 degrees. Not much of a cough though. I wish she wasn't so stoic, it makes it really hard at times.

Sleepless night ahead for me I think and no school tomorrow.

Anyone about - temp now 40.1 here and a very poorly DD. Waiting for a call back from a doctor.

How is she today lavender?

lavendersun · 24/03/2015 15:36

Slight improvement this afternoon, temp 39.2 last time I checked, very tired but alert and has managed a piece of toast and some strawberries. Still in bed though, I woke her to give her medicines at noon.

Thanks for asking, I am dreading tonight tbh.

If no improvement tomorrow we will go back .... She told the GP she felt absolutely fine Confused, and keeps apologising for being ill!

She sounds absolutely lovely. What a star. Smile

Hopefully the meds will kick in soon and she'll begin to fight it. My oldest is similarly stoic and it makes it so hard to assess what's happening when their gut reaction is to try and rally and soldier on. She's probably sad about missing all of the end of term stuff, plus her activities too.

Definitely go back tomorrow if there's no improvement as the antibiotics should be working by then.

Nights are the worse when they're ill. I'll be around on here this evening as I have a 3yo. With a chest infection. He's not stoic. He's the very opposite of stoic. Post again if you're worried and need to think out loud. Sometimes it's nice to know somebody else it out there even if their only help is to shrug and say 'I don't know either'. Grin

Thanks Grantaire - I hope your son is not too unwell. Hopefully an improvement here, still very hot but seems better in herself in the last hour or so which is good.

That's brilliant that she seems a little better. The fever shows her body is working hard and hopefully with the antibiotics as well, she'll be back to her usual self in no time.

Ds isn't too unwell. He's not great with chest type things. He had double pneumonia as a baby and any cough/cold type things he tends to struggle with a little more than his sister did because of some slight scarring to his lungs. He's okay really. He's in a cycle of coughing himself awake and getting upset and then not being able to sleep because he's upset and the finally sleeping and then coughing again and on and on and on and on and on. He's producing enough snot to drown an army.

Here's hoping for a germ free Easter. Last school holiday was sponsored by norovirus, tonsillitis and a perforated ear drum...
