So my 11 week old prem bb keeps having episodes of crying and if I don't calm him down in time he stops breathing and starts to change colour first he goes red then purple and then blue when he finally starts breathing again he is so pale it's so scary the Dr's have ruled out chest infection just waiting on an echo and ecg of his heart but it seems to be happening more often it first started when I took him in to be checked for a cold and it's not just happening when he is crying now it's also when he coughs which seems to be happening more the Dr's have mainly put it down to reflux but I'm having trouble accepting that this is the cause can anyone give me some advice I'm so worried I'm not sleeping properly and arguing more with my husband I feel like I'm stuck in a loop that's never ending Sad

When he is asleep it's like nothing wrong and it only started when he was 8 weeks old we do little blows to his face to remind him to breath we pat his back move him around cuddle him and it can last for up to a minute but feels like a lifetime we had an ambulance out once because he would begin to breath and then just stop again and they rushed us in with him on oxygen 4 days later they sent us home after doing x rays of his whole body brain scans everything apart from the ecg of his heart which we go to in April they even tried to say because he has red hair that it's his temper

We had this too, born at 29 weeks. It happened a lot when feeding. I remember being so worried I couldn't sleep too Flowers.

How old is he corrected? I think ours resolved itself at 3 months post due date (which was too long). We had reflux too here. We were advised to elevate the head of the cot from ground level. Not sure if that is current advice so please check with your doctor.

I can't remember the exact facts now tbh but rest assured there is no way anyone would take any chances. I know it is easy for me to say now that it is a distant memory.

Of course, if you are really concerned you must go back, don't be afraid of making a nuisance of yourself, you are his mum and I am sure that your doctor would want to see you if you are worried.

Is he on meds for reflux?
Does he have an assigned paediatrician for his follow-up?

My ex28 weeker DD had reflux which caused awful choking. We tried to elevate one end of her Moses basket and she was on proper meds for it (Lansoprazole). That's no good to you if it's not reflux though.

His cot is raised at head end he was 36.2 weeks when he was born by emergency c section because the placenta stopped working and was pumping blood back to in to me and not to him he is only 11 weeks but should only be 7 weeks he was 5 lb 1 when he was born and healthy was able to come home 3 days past opp and had no problems till my eldest caught a cold and the originally said he had bronculitus he got tested when we were in and no signs of it they have put him on gavascon and ranitadin for reflux but doesn't seem to make a difference

I remember well the exhaustion and worry and responsibility of "advocating" for DD through her health challenges. Flowers to you. Don't hesitate to go back if you are worried.

juniorcakeoff · 20/03/2015 21:53

Mine did this with reflux. Omeprazole (I think that might be the generic name for Lansoprazole) stopped the blue episodes but just mildly improved the other symptoms of reflux. Tended to be during feeds although he occasionally did it in the middle of a sleep. It's horrific but as I say the actual blue episodes were gone fairly quickly, maybe by 3 months ish.

Some babies do hold their breath in temper . But surely not at this age? And blaming it on red hair would piss me right off.

One Dr saw it happen and said possible brain problem another took advice of one of the nurses who told them it was a temper thing but I'm tempted to take him to see a different Dr because our local hospital has a reputation of being rubbish they diagnosed my eldest with twisted testes and sent us all the way to Nottingham a 3 hour drive turned out to be nappy rash caused by a reaction to floried in our water
