How high is to high for a sustained temperature?

Dd has had a temp since Thursday steadily increasing. Went to go yesterday and she has tonsillitis, started penicillin yesterday afternoon. Today her temp is going up to 40.5 and even after calpol it is only coming down to 38.5. Is 38..5 to high for a lowest temp? It has been like this for over 24 hours

How old? Apart from the temp how is your LO in themselves? Any other worrying symptoms? Floppy? Rash? Fast breathing? If it is just a high temp alternate between calpol & ibuprofen & it is just the body fighting an infection. But depends on age & whole picture?

If I can't get under 40 with meds then I worry. I don't worry if it comes down to 38.

A temperature in itself isn't that much of a worry. How old is she and how is she generally?

IME tonsillitis and ear infections are the worst for ski high temps. I agree look at the child not the thermometer, having said that if you are worried, or it won't come down then go back.

Is there any reason she can't have ibuprofen? If not then give her some too. Calpol & ibuprofen work v well together to lower temps. Ibuprofen is 6 to 8 hourly so give inbetween calpol doses.

NICE guidelines don't recommend alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol. You're supposed to just pick the one that works best and stick with that.

I agree with previous posters. It's more about how they are in themselves than what the thermometer says. Is she drinking ok?

She is 5 :( we ended up in children's ward yesterday , sent home about midnight and temp now at 41. If the antibiotics haven't started working by tomorrow they are admitting her and putting her on iv antibiotics. She is not well at all not eating but is having sips of water
