Dd has had a temp for 3 days, have been given regular calpol . She is off her food and complaining of a headache but after calpol is playing etc. As soon as calpol wears off she is shivering and freezing but feels hot. Gave her calpol an hour ago as she was hot, she woke up crying and I have took her temp again and it's gone up. Does this sometimes happen?

I would probably err on the side of caution and call nhs24.

Fevers aren't usually a worry - it is best to judge how they are in themselves, but if a fever got worse after calpol or ibuprofen I would be inclined for her to be checked.

How high is the temperature?

wildernessagogo · 16/03/2015 07:07

Do you have ibuprofen? Ita very good at controlling stubborn temps

TheSingingMonkey · 16/03/2015 16:07

You haven't said how old she is but after three days with a temperature I would get the GP to look at her. Although I've just noticed you haven't said how high her temperature is going.

The recommendation nowadays is to leave the temperature to do it's job and not give medicine unless they are irritable and in pain. You can give ibuprofen if you don't feel that calpol is helping and alternate the two.

Ds(3) was like this Thursday till Saturday. On Saturday his temperature was high and not going down, looked at his throat and it was covered in white spots again Sad OOH gave him antibiotics and he's much better already. Could you take a look down her throat? My son does the shivering while hot thing every time he's had it

I don't know about that advice monkey. It's ok to leave an adults temp but not small children. When DD was in hospital recently they worked very hard to get her temperature down. Things to try, a fan in the room, a luke warm bath, alternating calpol and infant ibuprofen at the dose specified on the box. Don't give them both together, half way between calpol doses give the ibuprofen etc. don't use cold flannels, cold baths or windows wide open as this can just drive the fever inwards. Also you mention that when the calpol wears off she is still hot? Give it on the minute that 4 hours have passed since the last dose. Keep her topped up for a good long stretch and take her temp at intervals. Once it's come down you can reduce calpol but you need to give it time to work.

Phone the GP, and chat to the receptionist. I suspect they will find an appointment for you this afternoon or tomorrow. Failing that NHS111.
And yes to getting some ibuprofen in her - alternate the two, so 2-3 hrs after calpol, give her Ibuprofen, and 2-3 hrs after that, calpol again. You need to work the doses carfully, as the number of doses you can give in 24 hrs are different, but definitely get some in her.

Read this.

Cooling down with water isn't recommended and hasn't been for years as it fools the body into thinking it's cooling down which causes the temperature to rise.
