hi, I have 5week+6day-old twin boys. And a coldsore. Currently treating with Zovirax. Have been kissing my boys (on cheek/head) before finding out that it can be really dangerous. Am freaking out! Boys are well. Google says it can be fatal FFS! Any advice? Has anyone had similar and babies been fine?

I googled... Ignore the daily mail - sensationalist rubbish!

I would recommend making an appointment with your GP or even a phone call with the practice nurse, to discuss what the chances are of this being a problem. I expect they will give you a good idea of what to look for just in case your babies have caught the virus from you. OR they may offer a preventative treatment.

Even if you have transmitted the virus there are all sorts of drugs & treatments to help reduce the threat.

My 2 yr old son has a very compromised immune system (much like your twin boys will have) and was given aciclovir to prevent him developing chicken pox after possible contact with the virus. Aciclovir is also very good at preventing the herpes (cold sore) virus developing, and is suitable for newborn babies (I think! Obviously you should ask your Dr) However it needs to be started within a certain time-frame after the initial contact with the virus (so as to stop it before it spreads), which is a week for chicken pox, but may be different for cold sores. I'd try & get an appointment with your GP today.

Hope this is at least a little reassuring.

I had a cold sore - my first and last when my baby was 3 weeks old. I didn't kiss him (almost impossible! ) and watched out for any signs of trouble.

Babies under 3 months should not get a high temperature or sweat so any sign of that go to nearest children's A&E
